He pulled her around so she laid against him. "Jesus, I miss you," John laughed warmly.

"I miss him too," Jane teased with a giggle.
He rolled his eyes facetiously.
She giggled harder and kissed her husband happily. "I love you."
"I love you too." He replied sweetly, curling his arms around her in a tight hug. After a moment, Chadine knocked, "Your two's tea is done, y'all want me to bring it in?"
Jane looked up at John. "Would you like tea now?"
"Why not?" He replied. "Come in, Chadine,"
She came in with a tray. It wasn't awkward or strange to see them naked; as Jane's caretaker, she'd had to help the woman dress hundreds of times around that swollen belly of hers, and as for John, she could care less. "I know you like your sugah, Jane, I assumed you like it the same way, Mr. André,"
"Yes, thank you," he reached an arm from the tub, taking his cup as Chadine set the tray down on a small table by the tub.
"Thank you, Chadine," Jane said kindly. "Why don't you go rest?"
"You be havin' me rest all the time, Jane. I feel better when I got stuff to do," Chadine assured.
"If it's fine with you, then," she said.
Chadine left promptly. John took a few moments to blow gingerly to cool down the freshly brewed tea.
"Reload!" The line of soldiers brought their weapon down, and quickly stuffed another bullet down the neck of the rifle.
Pierre’s hands moved automatically, needing no thought to complete the familiar action.
He had them aim, but instead of calling for them to fire, he caught them by surprise and told them to put their guns down.

Jane wiped the bubbles off her face and took her tea as well. "She's a darling, isn't she?"
"Absolutely," John spoke. "I wish I could repay her, with more than just a fancy home to live in." He sighed.

Pierre forced his expression to remain neutral, betraying none of his surprise as he lowered the firearm.

Jane sat slightly more upright. "That's it. We should get her a present!"
Edonine had been caught by surprise, and fired. Luckily she wasn't the only one, but the sergeant had become rather ruthless towards Edonine lately. "You!" He bellowed, making hard steps towards her. "Goddamnit, what's your name? Frank?"
"Francis." She muttered through gritted teeth. The sergeant leaned in close.
"Annoying when people don't listen to what they're told, yeah?" He growled. Edonine returned with a blank, hard stare.

"Huh?– well, obviously, but of what?" John contested.

Pierre visibly tensed, his lips pulling back into a barely concealed snarl.
"Why don't you show the regiment what a set of fifty push-ups look like, yeah?"
Edonine gave him a glare.
Pierre barely restrained himself, snuffing out the urge to punch the seargant square in the jaw.
Edonine threw her gun off to the side, kneeling down on the grass to do as she was told. Pierre knew she could only do close to twenty in a row. She wouldn't last.
The whole time, his free hand was clenched into a fist, barely hidden by the folds of his sleep.
"Mn-hh," she grunted as she tried to push forward, Pierre could see her freckled arms trembling. She was red in the face, both with exertion and embarrassment.
All he wanted to do was crouch next to her, pull her into his arms. But he couldn’t. He remained in line, breath trembling in the humid air.
"Come on!" The sergeant bellowed. "You're nothing close to a man!" He gave her a shoving kick, made her hiss with pain. The other soldiers just watched.. they couldn't do anything without facing the same wrath.

"I'm not sure…" she remarked, pursing her lips in thought.
"You know her much better than I," John replied, stroking her hair.

Pierre very nearly lost it. The only thing keeping him together was the knowledge that the consequences for both of them would be far worse if he moved a single muscle.
