"I can't wear it in front of the other soldiers," she realized in a whisper.

"A cord around your neck, beneath your shirt," he suggested, "Or just leave it in here."

"I've got some in my pack, I think." Pierre scooted backwards to retrieve a worn bag from the side of his sleeping back. After a few minutes of digging around, his hand emerged triumphantly, clutching a roll of leather cord.

"Perfect," he responded, leaning over he shoulder to press a kiss against her cheek. "You have made me a very happy man."

Pierre scrambled to his feet, hastily wiping the pear juice from his chin and reaching over to push open the entrance flap. "Sir?"

"The entire camp is waiting on your two sorry asses," he spoke gruffly. Edonine frowned. They must've not heard the sergeant among the two's excitement.

Edonine did the same, shoving the necklace under the overshirt and scrambling to compose herself to an acceptable degree. The drill sergeant watched with a deadpan, impatient expression. To some degree.. this drill sergeant was much worse than Bailey. Edonine remembered, if you did it at just the right time, you could buy yourself out of drill time by offering their old sergeant alcohol. But this one.. oh, Jesus. What a prude, when it came to bribes.

She trailed behind with a stiff posture, partially thanks to the binder beneath her shirt. The sergeant walked behind them, as they headed for the lineup.

Pierre forced an emotionless expression onto his face as they walked, ignoring the whispered comments on their tardiness.

John lifted his head to kiss her cheek, "I'm so sorry I haven't been here.."

"It isn't your fault," she murmured quietly.

Pierre pulled the trigger as instructed, barely flinching at the cacophonous noise that went up.

His fiancee had become stony and solid against the backfire of the rifle. Oh, how far she'd come.
