Luca took out the journal and sighed. I guess it's time to finally look through this thing…. He leaned back as he opened his brother's journal, some of the pages stuck together.
Ashira looked over Luca's shoulder. "Finally looking through your journal?" She didn't read anything on the page, in order to let him have his privacy.
"It's not mine. It's my brother's." Luca stated, reading the first page. Property of Bruno Bianchi. The handwriting was in cursive. He flipped to the next page, careful not to rip it. Notes were scribbled down in a some-what neat fashion. Drawings filled the extra space.
Ashira glanced at one of the drawings and saw a symbol she recognized.
Dang. This is super neat handwriting for a sixth grader… Luca shook his head, laughing a little. He carefully read through each sentence on the page, trying to find…anything really. "I was hoping to find some information in this thing. Nothing so far though." Luca told no one in particular.
Cece looked in the rear view mirror. “If there’s no info in there, then what is in it?” she asked, “If you don’t mind telling,”
Luca shrugged. "Nothing much. It's just a run through of my brother's life. Like a diary." It was hard for him to not feel a little sad as he flipped to the next page. "I knew that he had powers as well, but there's nothing about it so far."
Cece gave him a small smile. She wasn’t sure what to say. “We’ll find something,” she said.
He nodded, still reading through the pages. Let's see…oh look, that was on my birthday! Luca smiled a little, flipping the page again. Nothing…nothing…aha! He pointed to the part of the page where his brother had written about powers. "I found something amazing today. The powers that Gavin had been talking about, I found them. I created water." Luca mumbled to himself.
“Did you find something?” Cecelia asked. She attempted to look at the journal through the mirror, but could only see everyone’s faces.
"Yeah. I found the page where he discovered his powers." Luca paused, looking down at the journal. "He said that someone named Gavin had been talking about them."
Cece furrowed her eyebrows. “Gavin… how’s it spelled?” she asked. It was a bit of a stretch, but they could be the same person.
"G…A…V…I…N." Luca spelled out, careful not to miss a letter. "Why do you ask?"
“Great, it’s the normal spelling,” she muttered. She answered his question in her normal voice, “My dad used to have an employee named Gavin. He got fired a few years ago for a reason that I wasn’t told. It probably isn’t the same person though, that spelling is pretty popular,”
Luca nodded. "Gavin is a pretty popular name." He looked at Cece for a few seconds before looking back down at the journal. "This is the only time my brother ever mentions him. So far, at least." He turned the page and kept reading, this time out loud. "Alright next page is from a few weeks after he discovered it. I haven't had time to write. These new powers have been taking up all my time, but I have learned to control them now."
“Okay,” Cece said, nodding. “Does it say anything about how he learnt to control it?”
Luca shook his head. "Nothing. He was pretty secretive when it came to the whole power thing. The only reason I knew that he had them is because I walked in on him trying to create a ball of water."
“Dangit,” Cece said. “What else has he written?”
Luca flipped through the pages. "He doesn't really talk about it for a few pages…ah! Here we go!" He read out loud. "Gavin came by today. He gave me something, some medicine to help control my powers. Yesterday, they were getting out of hand. Almost drowned someone."
Cece swore. “He almost drowned someone? And medicine? Does he say anything else?” Cece questioned.
Luca gulped when he read the date on the corner of the page. "…No. No, that was it…."
Cece frowned. “I’m sorry, Luca,” she said quietly.
"It's fine." Luca closed the journal and leaned back. "It's just…" His voice got quieter. "That was the day before he…passed."
She looked into the rear view mirror at him. Her curiosity was getting the better of her. “How… how did he, you know?” she asked. She regretted it right after she’d asked it. “Sorry, that was rude. You don’t have to tell me. I mean, of course you don’t have to tell me… I’m going to shut up now,”
"No, it's fine." Luca put the journal back inside his coat. "We…well we don't know exactly what happened but…it was most likely an overdose. That….or poison…"
Teresa listened to their conversation. They had left a window part way open, and so she couldn't help but overhear. Gavin. She thought the name sounded familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had heard it.
Cece’s mind started running a million miles an hour. “The medicine!” she exclaimed. “The medicine, it could’ve been poison!”
Luca felt like an idiot. He groaned, smacking himself in the face. "Of course it was…" He mumbled to himself.
Wait. Poison… Teresa's mind raced. She knew now who Luca's brother had been writing about. She knew him by a different name, but she was almost 100% sure she knew who it was.
“Maybe he- maybe your brother- maybe he took too much, or maybe Gavin poisoned him, or…” Cece rambled. “Maybe we’ll find answered at my dad’s. If the Gavin who gave your brother the medicine is the same Gavin that worked for my dad, we’ll find some answers at my dad’s place. Hopefully.”
