Instead, Barry’s entire body went rigid. He was unable to move, barely able to breath.
Panic flooded his system.
Instead, Barry’s entire body went rigid. He was unable to move, barely able to breath.
Panic flooded his system.
"Crap, nonono… No, please, gosh… Oh my gosh," Kasey gasped as she watched him.
That wasn't what she'd meant to do. How was she supposed to release him? Why couldn't she know?
She looked at Barry with terrified eyes, afraid of herself. "I don't— How do I fix this? Barr, I don't know what to do… I don't know what to do…"
Barry gasped for breath—or, tried to. But not even his lungs would expand, and his heartbeat was beginning to slow….
I’m going to die. Oh my god—I’m going to die.
All of a sudden, Kasey froze as she had a thought. Maybe, just maybe…
"I release you," she breathed, her breaths shallow as she watched him.
Barry crumpled back against the sheets like a limp doll, shaking and gasping for air. He curled into a tight ball, trying and failing to calm his racing heart, to convince his stupid mind that what had just happened wasn’t a big deal.
"I'm sorry. I'm so— I'm so sorry," Kasey choked out, covering her mouthy as tears filled her eyes. What had she done? "I'm so sorry, Barry."
She stood up from the bed, backing away slowly as she shook her head. She couldn't believe what had just happened. She could have killed him…
Kasey’s turmoil cut straight all his panic and confusion. Barry immediately forced his limbs to cooperate and sat up, reaching for her. “N-No. It’s my fault. I asked you to. Come back—Please.”
"I just almost— I could have killed you, Barry!" Kasey exclaimed incredulously as she stared at him. "I can't— I don't— I have no idea what I'm doing with this power…"
Barry leaned forward unsteadily, wrapped his fingers around her wrist, and pulled her back onto the bed. “But—But you didn’t. I’m fine.”
What did it matter that his heart was still struggling to return to its normal speed? What did it matter that he’d almost lost his life? Kasey was distressed, ashamed, guilty. Afraid. And t was his job to fix that.
Kasey sank down into the bed, pulling her knees up to her chest and burying her face in them. She let out a choked sob that she'd been trying to hide. In less than twenty-four hours, her boyfriend had been kidnapped, tortured, and probably almost killed, and then she'd just almost killed him herself… What was wrong with her?
"I'm so sorry, Barr…" she whispered after a while. "Are you… You're really okay…?"
Barry pulled her into a weak but warm embrace. “I’m alive..” he murmured, rocking her back and forth, “And with the most amazing person ever to grace this planet. What else matters?”
Kasey buried herself in him, glad for the comfort and warmth. She'd been missing this for the past month… Why had she ever thought it was a good idea to distance herself from him?
"Okay… As long as you're okay, that's all that I care about," she murmured, not acknowledging the comment about her. She couldn't bring herself to argue with him, mostly because she knew he would win, anyway…
He ran his fingers gently through her hair, combing out each tangle. “And you? Are you okay?”
With a slow sigh, Kasey shook her head. "No," she admitted softly, wrapping her arms around him in a tight embrace. "But I will be. Thanks to you…"
Barry pressed his face against the crook of her neck, letting his warm breath fan across her skin. “I will do whatever it takes to see you smile again..”
Kasey relaxed a little and uncurled herself to tangle their legs together. "Thank you… I love you so much, Barry Lawrence," she whispered, moving to bury her face in his hair. "You mean the world and more to me…"
Barry’s previously failing heart beat a little louder after that. “You are my world. Yesterday…. I was so upset because of how much you mean to me. I was terrified of losing you..”
"I was terrified of losing you," Kasey breathed, shifting so she could bury her face in his chest instead of his hair (it kept tickling her nose when she tried to breathe). "I really thought she would kill you. I thought that I would get back, and you would just be sitting limply in that chair, the life driven from your eyes… And I almost couldn't handle it…"
“I’m sorry…” he whispered, clinging to her. “It’s all over now… we’re safe…”
"I know… And it's not your fault, so don't apologize. Please," Kasey whispered, looking up at him with a soft, almost sad, expression. "Let's just… Let's cuddle and do whatever all day. I want to spend as much time with you as possible. We need to catch up for the time we missed, after all."
Barry pressed his lips to her forehead. “Of course..” he murmured, “That sounds fantastic.”
Kasey cracked a tiny smile at the kiss, pulling back to look at him. "Are you are the best boyfriend in the world. Hands down. No competition because you crushed them all.."
A faint smile tugged at his lips. “I love you…. so much..”
"I love you, too," Kasey whispered, bringing up a hand to cup his cheek gently. "Thank you for always being here for me."
His smile turned sad. “I wasn’t here for you this month… but I promise you, from now on, I always will. No matter what.”
“And I’ll be here for you. Always, from this moment on,” Kasey said softly.
“I have no doubt about that.” After a pause, Barry wrapped his fingers around Kasey’s wrist. “Your new power—I’m really happy for you. It’s very badass and cool.”
Kasey let her hand fall from his cheek and looked away. “It’s horrible. I don’t understand it. I could kill someone…”
Barry slipped a finger beneath her chin and turned it towards him again. “No, it’s fantastic. You have another way to defend yourself. Speaking of, the moment I’m well enough to get back to uni, I’m going to murder the guy who forced himself on you.”
Kasey sighed shakily at the beginning of his speaking. When he finished, her eyes widened and she shook her head.
“No, don’t. It doesn’t matter. It’s over. Please, leave him alone. I don’t want you to get in trouble,” she whispered.
