Barry tugged at the sleeve of the sweater she was wearing——his sweater——and all of a sudden, tears were spilling from his eyes.
Barry tugged at the sleeve of the sweater she was wearing——his sweater——and all of a sudden, tears were spilling from his eyes.
Kasey looked up at the tug of her sleeve and saw the wetness of tears dripping down his cheeks. She closed her eyes again and felt her own tears pricking in her eyes.
“I missed you so much,” she whispered after a few seconds. “Some nights— Some nights I laid awake just staring up at the ceiling, wishing you would join me in bed again. I knew you wouldn’t; although, I didn’t know why… And other nights I would go through your clothes and find something that still smelled like you so I could put it in and feel like you were here with me. I missed you so much, Barr… So much…”
And Barry crumbled. Broke down. Shattered to pieces, sobbed his heart out while he buried his face in her shoulder. He’d spent so long trying to protect her, staying strong, but for one of the first times, he was stripping himself of all defenses and showing his girlfriend how weak and powerless he felt.
Kasey cried with him, though her tears were silent ones. She was weak, he knew that; he was weak in places, too, and she knew that. But now, seeing him like this, she just hurt all over.
This was her fault. No matter how many times he tried to persuade her otherwise, she knew that it was. And she hoped he could forgive her for it…
“It’s okay, love… We’re together again. And I’m not going to leave you if I have a choice in it,” she murmured gently, her voice shaking and giving away the tears streaming down her cheeks. “I love you. I love you so much… And I would still say ‘yes’…”
Barry curled his body into a tight ball, praying for the strength to hold Kasey, to comfort her.
But it didn't come. He could only lie there, helpless, gripping her hand like a lifeline, unable to form words.
Kasey—
"Sleep, love," Kasey eventually murmured, kissing his cheek softly. "You'll feel better in the morning. Then we can talk about everything and clear the air."
He squeezed his eyes shut and managed a weak nod.
"I–I love you, too…."
(Sounds good!)
Kasey hadn't fallen asleep until much later in the night. She'd been too busy enjoying the closeness of Barry and listening to the sound of his breathing. It was comforting to have him back with her, sharing the bed once more.
Now, it was after seven in the morning, which meant that it was already about two hours Ayer she would normally wake up. This morning, though, her body and mind seemed to agree that she should continue sleeping, even through the few alarms she'd set to wake herself up.
Barry did not sleep well.
He fell into the embrace of unconsciousness quickly, yes, but it was not soothing black and a restful night that met with him.
Instead, nightmares greeted him with open arms. And by the time his eyes blinked open, drawn from the depths of a horrible dream, he was shaking, whimpering, and gasping for air.
The sounds of whimpering and gasping for breath caught Kasey's sleeping ears. She stirred with a soft sound of displeasure at being awoken, but she was quickly wide awake when she realized the sounds were coming from Barry.
She sat up straight and reached out to touch his cheek before remembering what had happened the night before. Instead, she placed it on the side of his head, hoping it would comfort him a bit.
"Barry… Hey… It was just a dream, okay?" she murmured softly, looking down at him with worry obvious in her eyes.
His vision cleared, glazed eyes focusing on the apparition alone him. With the morning sunlight wreathing her head like a halo, Kasey truly looked like an angel. His saviour…
“Kase….” he murmured, rubbing fervently at his eyes.
"Morning, babe… Do you want some water or anything?" Kasey offered without moving from her place. She would go get him a glass if he asked, but for now she just wanted to be this close to him for as long as possible.
“N-No,” Barry managed, forcing his limbs to cooperate as he shifted into a sitting position against the pillows. “I want—I want you. To talk to you. Hold you. Sort everything out. If—If That’s okay?”
Kasey nodded slowly and scooted closer to him. She leaned into his side, burying her face in his neck.
"That sounds perfect," she said softly. "Are you still sore? I don't want to accidentally hurt you by hugging you wrong…"
“It doesn’t matter,” he whispered, pulling her closer to his side than she’d been all month. “I missed you.”
"I missed you, too," Kasey whispered somewhat shakily. She wrapped her arms around him, curling up closer to him. "I should have talked to you about being stressed out… I just— I didn't know how to talk about it. But you would have been there for me, and I knew that. I just couldn't bring myself to say anything…"
Barry tightened his hold on her.
“It’s—It’s okay. You’re not obligated to tell me anything,” he whispered, but his voice wobbled dangerously.
“Maybe not, but I should, as your girlfriend,” Kasey murmured quietly. “And that guy in the hall… He was really drunk. He’d pinned me against the wall and wouldn’t get off. I only got him off because I accidentally found something out about my powers…”
Barry’s eyebrows lifted. “Wait—What?”
Kasey smiled a little and looked up at him. “Well, apparently, I can kind of… control minds? To an extent, I think. I’m not sure how it works. It just sort of… happened…”
Barry blinked, trying to wrap his head around the new information. “You…. you mean—Wait—“
“It’s crazy, I know…” Kasey sighed, chewing on her lip. “And maybe I imagined it, anyway…”
“Try it on me,” Barry murmured after a lengthy pause. “Force me to… lift my hand. Or stand. Or something.”
"Are you sure? I'm not even sure how I did it. I might have just finally managed to push him off of me, anyway. It might not even be real," Kasey rambled, unsure about it all.
Barry exhaled shakily. “Do it. Please.”
Kasey sighed and looked away for a moment. When she turned back, she looked right into his eyes. In her mind and out loud, she said, "Lift your hand."
Barry watched, struggling to keep his expression blank as his arm lifted into the air of his own accord. "I—Stop. Please."
Kasey blinked as couple of times as she watched his hand raise. She did that… She made him lift his hand… Now, this… This was power…
"I… I don't know how," she whispered, her eyes turning back to Barry and widening.
"Kasey," he breathed, eyes fixed to his hovering hand. "Please. Stop. Figure out a way. I can't—-Please."
Kasey sucked in a breath and shut her eyes tight. Maybe that would work? When she opened her eyes again after a moment and saw tha it hadn't, she looked back into Barry's
"Stop," she murmured finally, hoping it would work.
