Sebastian gave the stranger a one-armed push away from the car, inwardly seething. On the outside, his face was blank and hard, giving nothing away.

"Nice meeting you. Bye-bye," he said sarcastically, turning towards Devon.

The man growled, his eyes flaming and his nostrils flaring as he was pushed away. The other man was bigger than he was, though, so he wasn’t about to start a fight with him. No matter how much he wanted to.

“Fine,” he spat before turning away. “Have her, then.”

Devon sighed in relief as the man walked away, and she turned to Sebastian with a grateful look. “Thank you,” she breathed, bringing a hand to the front of her throat, where she could feel her blood pumping with adrenaline.

The cold expression melted straight off Sebastian's face the moment that the other man turned to leave. "Are you alright?" he asked Devon, careful to give her at least a metre of space. "Did he do anything to you?"

And maybe it was strange, acting like this for a woman he'd just met… but in all honesty, he didn't care.

“No, no,” Devon assured him quickly as she shook her head, still a little breathless from her encounter. “Thank you. I— Thank you.”

She didn’t know why this man had saved her from the inevitable fate, but she was eternally grateful that he had. If he hadn’t shown up…

No. Stop thinking about it. He stopped it before it could happen.

Sebastian folded his and nodded, biting the inside of his cheek. “Don’t worry about it—— sorry if that was weird of me, I know we only met yesterday, but I didn’t want— yeah.”

He swallowed, and suddenly, he was back in Elle’s bedroom, sitting across from her on the bed as she gripped his hands like a lifeline. She trembled all over, recounting the horrible story of what had almost happened that day…..

Snap out of it.

“It wasn’t weird. It was kind. Not everyone would have had the courage to step in like that,” Devon said softly, rubbing at her throat again. Her heart had finally started to slow down, and she could breathe again.

(Wait, what almost happened???)

(To Elle? A guy came up to her car in the parking lot of the grocery store and tried to get her out of it)

Sebastian’s eyes darted away, though his shoulders relaxed when he realized that she wasn’t confused or uncomfortable. “I’m just glad you’re okay…” He sounded as if he was about to say more, but refrained from doing so at the last second and offered a small smile.

(Oof… Poor Seb has had a lot happen to him and he people he cares about…)

Devon nodded slowly and brought her eyes up to his face. Who was his man who had a small daughter like her own but no evidence of a wedding band on his finger? Who was this man who would save her from a guy trying to get something out of her?

“Thank you, again,” she said softly, moving her arms to wrap them around herself.

(If you haven’t noticed yet, I love hurting my characters lol)

“Like I said, don’t worry about it. That guy was a real asshole, I’m happy to have sent him on his way.” Rubbing self-consciously at the side of his arm, Sebastian dragged his eyes back from the pavement to her face again. Don’t jump to any conclusions…. But it was easier said than done. A single mother who looked roughly his age…. Stop.

(Lol. It’s an author thing.
Also, Sebastian is very perceptive… He always seems to figure out what Devon has gone through.)

Devon blinked when he looked up at her again, noticing for the first time how the soft light coming from the clouds seemed to catch on his caramel-colored eyes. She mentally shook herself and removed the thought from her mind.

“Right… So, um… I’m actually going to be late for work, so I should really go now,” she admitted softly.

(Sorry if that seems unrealistic…. that’s just what my brain would automatically jump to, but maybe that’s only because I know a teenage mother. I’ll change it if you want me to..)

Sebastian nodded easily. “Alright, I’ll leave you to that. Have a nice day,” he told her sincerely and took a few steps back. “Bye.”

(No, I like it! Sorry, I just thought it was kinda funny…)

Devon let a small smile take over her lips, this one more genuine than usual. “Yeah. You too, Sebastian. I’ll provably see you later,” she said before unlocking her car and slipping inside.

(Oh… sorry.)

Sebastian raised a hand as a gesture of farewell and took a few steps backwards. “Yeah.” He gave a little wave and turned slowly on his heel, beginning to walk in the other direction.

(Skip? Maybe when they pick the girls up?)

Maybe Layla and Ella are crying their eyes out and don’t want to leave each other at all, so Seb and Devon organize something together?)

Btw, if I don’t respond for a while, I’m probably driving. Or with my friend. Or both.)

Devon smiled as she stepped into the daycare. It had been a good day at work for her, and her manager had dropped a hint that she might get promoted soon. Overall, she was unusually happy by the time she got to pick her daughter up.

As soon as she stepped into the room, her daughter saw her and ran toward her, squealing happily. “Mommy, mommy, mommy!”

Devon laughed and scooped her little blonde girl up, kissing her nose once hey were at the same height. “Hey, babycakes. You ready to go home?”

Sebastian bounced Ella up and down, practically overflowing with joy as the little girl buried her face in his shoulder and hugged him as tight as her little arms could. “I missed you,” he whispered playfully in her ear, before blowing a raspberry against her cheek. She giggled uncontrollably, reaching up to grab his nose. “Daddy missed you— did ou miss daddy?” Ella nodded vigorously.

Nuzzling his daughter affectionately, Sebastian turned to leave the room— just as Ella caught sight of her best daycare friend. “La-la!!” She yelled, reaching out towards Layla.

At the sound of her name, Layla squirmed in her mother’s arms, almost getting dropped in the process. She giggled at the sight of her friend and reached out for her.

“El! El!” she squealed excitedly.

Devon struggled to hold onto the squirming child before finally just setting her down. The little girl ran over, with her mother close behind, and attached herself to Sebastian’s leg.

“Layla, no. Let go of Sebastian, honey,” Devon said, walking a little faster to get there.

Sebastian almost fell over when a heavy object latched onto his leg. He quickly steadied himself and made sure that Ella was still upright, before peering down to see that Layla was currently wrapped around his lower leg. In his arms, Ella squealed as loudly as her little lungs could muster and tried to launch herself down towards the floor, which nearly caused him to topple again.

"Ella!" Finally, he managed to steady himself against the wall and carefully set his daughter down, laughing quietly. "Hey there, Layla. Where's your mother?"

“Mommy coming,” the little girl declared with a grin as she looked up at him. “El! Hi!!!”

Devon chuckled softly as she reached the trio. She gave Sebastian an apologetic look as she moved to detatch her daughter from his leg.

“Sorry about that… She likes to hug people,” she apologized with a small smile.

Sebastian stifled another quiet laugh, running a hand through his hair. "Don't worry about it, I don't mind." He was about to say more when Ella cut him off and launched herself towards Layla, wrapping the tiny girl up in a sloppy hug.

"They really like each other, don't they?" He shook his head with an amused smile. "Anyways, how are you?"

“It would certainly seem so,” Devon agreed as she watched her daughter with an amused look on her face. She glanced up at his question and nodded slowly. “I’m pretty good today. What about you?”

Layla squealed happily and hugged the younger girl back. “El! You play with the babies?”

Ella let out a squeal that Sebastian assumed meant something along the lines of 'yes'. He glanced back up at Devon, tugging at the collar of his sweater. "I'm okay." Unsure how to continue, he elected to bend down and scoop Ella up. The decision was not received well. His daughter immediately began to scream in protest, tears forming in her eyes.

Devon blinked as Ella started to scream. Looking down, she saw that Layla was nearly on the verge of doing that herself.

Her daughter was pouting, her little lower lip quivering as she looked up at her friend. “Noooooo,” she whined as Devon tried to pick her up.
