Marla shook her head firmly, repeating her statement. "I would never let my crush see me cry. My turn now! Truth or dare?"
Marla shook her head firmly, repeating her statement. "I would never let my crush see me cry. My turn now! Truth or dare?"
“Ugh, I guess truth this time.” Gwen tried to look as confident as possible, but she felt a little intimidated by what Marla could ask her.
Marla pretended to tap her nose in thought, enjoying the opportunity to have the upper hand and fluster Gwen for once. “Hm.. If you saw your crush right now, and had the opportunity to do anything at all to them with zero negative consequences for either of you, what would you do?”
Gwen’s cheeks and ears turned a bright red. Her ears, in particular, tilted back a bit more. “I uh…” She paused to collect herself. “Well, I um… I guess I’m cold at the moment, so probably just force them to cuddle with me.” She smiled sheepishly.
Marla almost reached out to touch the points of Gwen’s elfin ears before realizing how creepy that would seem. She gave a teasing, wry smile instead, finishing the last of her pizza off. “I guess I’ll just have to do for now, huh? Alright, your turn.”
“Y-Yeah…” It took Gwen several moments to function enough to ask the question again. “Truth or dare?”
Marla weighed the pros and cons of each option, before finally deciding to take a risk. “Dare.”
Gwen smirked, taking a moment to think as her ears popped up again once she calmed. “I dare you to…” She chewed her lip, deciding to take a risk. “text your crush right now.”
Somehow, Marla managed to blanch despite her ivory skin, the blood draining from her face. “I don’t- I don’t have her number,” she stammered, clearly lying.
“Princess, no offense, but I get the feeling that you might be lying to me.” Gwen raised an eyebrow at Marla, trying not to be hurt knowing that she liked someone else.
If dying of absolute embarrassment was possible, Marla would have been long dead by now. “I— Shit. I can’t—“
Gwen stopped goading Marla, seeing her distress. “Hey, it’s okay. I’m not going to force you!” She enveloped Marla intoa hug. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to stress you out. Whoever you like is lucky to have someone like you looking out for them. You’re honestly a sweet person.”
“Sorry..” she mumbled into Gwen’s shoulder, shame washing over her. “I just— our situation is complicated. Texting her would mess everything up. Ask me to do anything else, though.”
“Dare you to keep hugging me.” Gwen was dealing with a whole different kind of sorrow as it hit her that Marla was head over heels for someone else. Her ears had dropped while she clung onto Marla.
Marla wrapped her arms securely around Gwen, keeping her face buried in the other girl’s shoulder so that her blush wasn’t visible. “Do you like someone?”
Gwen went silent for a moment before quietly mumbling “I pick dare.” to deflect the question.
“I…. dare you to tell me the name of who you like.” Marla, half in Gwen’s lap by now, hastened to add on to her statement. “If you want to. Or I can give you another dare.”
“Starts with an M.” Gwen replied relatively smoothly considering how much she was internally screaming. She pulled Marla fully into her lap, hiding her face in the girl’s shoulder.
Marla was completely, one-hundred-percent done for. She was in Gwen’s lap. Her crush’s lap. An M… Her heart soared. “And… what does it end with?” she dared to ask, more breathless than she’d have liked.
Gwen, who wasn’t quite ready to confess her crush on Marla, merely shook her head. “That’d just ruin the mystery of it all.” She mumbled, her voice a little muffled from hiding her face.
Marla, who was acutely aware of every place their bodies were pressed together, kept clinging to Gwen despite the fact that her dare was over. “Aw… it’s not like I’d know them, but fine. You ask now.”
“Truth or dare?” Gwen asked softly, trying to force herself to relax a little bit.
“Truth, this time,” she decided, beginning to run her fingers through Gwen’s hair.
Gwen’s ears automatically twitched and tilted down a bit, the tips of them growing red as a blush spread to her cheeks. “Are you having fun?”
“Obviously.” Marla leaned back just a bit in order for Gwen to see her huge grin. “That was easy. Truth or dare?”
“Dare.” Gwen smiled back, relieved that she hadn’t scared Marla off.
Marla gathered Gwen’s hair into a messy bun at the nape of her neck before letting it tumble down again. “I dare you…. To do the thing you want to do the most right now. No matter how crazy. If it’s the thing you want more than anything else, do it.”
Gwen had never quite understood what was so compelling about truth or dare. Why she always felt obligated to speak the truth like she swore on a holy name or complete each dare like she’d signed a contract. But right now, with the stars glowing above her head and her crush sitting in her lap, Gwen could feel the magnetic pull of the game stronger than ever. “You’re going to regret that…” Gwen could hardly breath, her eyes locking with Marla’s for a split second. She gently raised Marla’s chin with a shaky hand, moving it to cup her cheek and draw her closer.
It happened so fast that Gwen could hardly realize she had done it. She pressed her lips against Marla’s, soft and gentle. Afraid to press her beyond the lightest touch. She pulled back almost instantly, hyperventilating and hyper aware of what she’d just done. The unspoken rule she broke. And if it weren’t for Marla sitting on her lap, Gwen would’ve already starting running for her life. But instead, she was trapped and frozen, her ears drooping and her gaze directed anywhere but at Marla.
Marla was floating.
That was the only way she could describe the bubbly, ridiculously happy feeling that spread through her chest like a gentle wildfire.
“Oh my god…” she breathed, staring wide-eyed at the divine entity beneath her. Am I dreaming? She had to be dreaming. Things like this only happened in Disney movies and YA novels, not to regular young adults, and definitely not to her.
But she was not going to let this moment, this beautiful, blessed moment, slip away from her. She leaned forward to rest her forehead on top of Gwen’s. “Look at me. Breathe, and don’t you dare apologize. Now, do that again. What you just did. Kiss me.”
