Sebastian could see the faint neon lights of the sign advertising the bar from a block away, beckoning to him. He stared down at his sweaty palms then wiped them hastily on his pants, telling himself not to be stupid, that he was going to do fine. Breathe, he reminded as he got closer, adjusting the strap of his guitar.
Devon walked up to the door of the bar and brushed her dress down with her hands nervously. Anything could happen tonight. She just hoped it wouldn’t be anything bad.
He caught sight of Devon up ahead, and sped up his pace. "Devon!"
Hearing her name, Devon spun around. The light pink skirt of her dress flared out a little, and she grinned at the sight of Sebastian. It was nice to see a familiar face in a very unfamiliar place.
“Sebastian! Hey. Are you excited to be playing tonight?” she asked, walking out to meet him halfway.
Sebastian closed his mouth before he could be accused of gaping at the sight of Devon, clearing his throat. "Nervous, but yeah. You– You look beautiful. I mean- You always do. But you know what I mean."
Devon blushed and smiled a little, moving a stray hair from out of her face. “Oh… Well, thanks… Um. You look nice, too,” she said with a nervous laugh.
"Thanks," he mumbled, cheeks blazing. After an awkward pause, he gestured towards the bar. "You ready?"
Devon let out a heavy sigh and glanced toward the door again. “As I’ll ever be,” she declared.
"Step out whenever you need to, alright?" Sebastian reached for her hand, then pulled back. "Can I- Can I hold you hand?"
(Yes please my heart omg)
(lol)
“Oh… Sure. Yeah, of course,” Devon said softly, giving him a small, slightly flustered smile as she reached her hand out to him.
Sebastian gladly took it, enjoying the way it fit so snugly in his. Then, grinning like the absolute idiot he was, he led her inside.
Devon was glad it was dark. That way, he wouldn't be able to see the way just the simple action made her cheeks heat up. It had been so long since she had allowed – since she had even wanted – someone to touch her this way… Or any way, really…
The bar was awash in a dim golden light, smooth, dark wood making up most of its interior. Loud, drunken laughter could be hear above more quiet conversations, couples pressed each other into corners, men in groups knocked back shots together.
Devon's gaze flickered around the room, quickly taking everything in. There were spots that seemed to be safer than others, where fewer people were standing or sitting, and places that seemed a little more dangerous, where men had women pulled into their laps as they drank glass after glass of mind-numbing alcohol.
"This is actually the first time I've been in a bar," she admitted as she looked around at everything. "It's… loud."
Sebastian bit the inside of his cheek, turning his head in an attempt to scout out the safest possible spot for Devon to sit. “You’re not missing much, I can tell you that. Here— there’s a spot over there.”
"Honestly, I never really planned to enter a bar–" Not after what happened that night… "–so I would never have known if you didn't tell me you were playing here tonight," Devon mused as she headed toward the spot Sebastian had pointed out.
Sebastian sat her down in the the chair. “Right, yeah. Are you okay here?”
Devon nodded and smiled up at him a little. “Yeah, I think I should be fine. Thank you. How long do you have before you go up?”
“Ten minutes.” Sebastian laughed nervously, tugging at the strap of his guitar case. “I don’t think I’ve ever practiced as much as I did yesterday in my life.”
“Well, at least you’re prepared,” Devon said with a soft chuckle. “Are you nervous?”
“Extremely.” Sebastian’s knee was bouncing up and down, his body alive with nervous energy.
“I’m sure you’ll do great. Just… focus on something that’s not the crowd. And don’t pretend everyone is in their underwear,” Devon chuckled. “I’m not sure how people think that works…”
Sebastian reddened considerably. “Yeah. I just usually stare a couple centimetres above their heads..”
(Me: Focus on Devon!
Devon: What? No! Don’t do that!)
“So, anyway… Are you just going to do covers tonight? Or will you play some of your originals?” Devon wondered.
(loll
that's totally what'll happen wink wink nudge nudge)
"Covers for today," he clarified for Devon, still keeping hold of her hand. "If I get invited back, I may sing an original… eventually."
(;D)
“Well, I’d love to hear more of your original music, sometime,” Devon said softly, giving his hand a small squeeze.
(Are they at the kiss-to-the-back-of-the-hand stage yet?)
At this, Sebastian's heart skipped a beat. "Maybe- Maybe next time you come over. If you want."
