The dancers took turns to take their bows, until finally Mare and the two other main dancers went last.
Everyone rushed off stage. Mare rushed to the her dressing room, tugged off her costume at walked out to meet Marianne.
Marianne rushed to meet her, grinning hugely. “Mare!”
Mare whipped around at the sound of her girlfriend's voice. She caught Marianne in a tired hug, pressing her close. "Hey," she laughed in relief.
Marianne wrapped her arms around Mare, grinning like an absolute idiot. "You didn't tell me you were the best teenage ballerina in the country!" she teased, though she meant every word. "That was amazing."
Mare laughed and hugged Marianne tighter. "I'm so glad you think so." A passing dancer jostled Mare but both girls ignored it. "I was really nervous about the double pirouette but I actually did it well!" Mare rambled.
"You were spectacular!" Marianne pulled her girlfriend out of the doorway, barely refraining from showering her with kisses. "And I have something for you if you can come over… I didn't want to bring it in case it got destroyed."
Mare brightened even further. "That'd be amazing! I just have to go get changed. You can come with me if you want, see the dressing room?" She started backing away towards said room.
"I'd love too," she answered happily, feeling a bit like a puppy as she followed Mare into the back room.
Taking Marianne by the hand, Mare led her to the back rooms. Only a handful of girls were left. Mare took Marianne to her section of the room and sat down to take her makeup off.
"Had you ever seen a ballet?"
"A few times, yeah," she answered, kneeling in front of Mare. "Mostly adults. Need any help taking your makeup off?" Of course, she was only searching for an excuse to touch the other girl's face in front of others.
Mare smiled at herself in the mirror and handed Marianne the sponge. "Please."
"Gladly." Marianne gave a teasing wink and leaned forward to cup her girlfriend's cheek in her hand.
Mare turned towards Marianne, savouring the long-waited contact.
She took care wiping the makeup off, moving slower than necessary just for the pleasure of being able to touch her girlfriend like this. When she was done, she lingered a few seconds, pretending to double check for spots she’d passed over.
Mare leaned into Marianne's touch, following every stroke of her hand across her own face. She immediately missed the closeness when Marianne finished.
The last of the girls left the room as Mare stood to get the rest of her costume off.
"Thank you."
“It was no problem,” Marianne assured her with a secretive smile, skin tingling where it had touched Mare’s. “Do you need me to leave or turn around…..?”
"Uh, either way," she hesitated. She wasn't sure about… where they were. "Up to you."
“I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable,” Marianne said quickly. “And I don’t want…. to touch you or be touched yet. I wouldn’t do anything even if I wanted to.”
Mare nodded. "I'm glad we're on the same page then," she admitted quietly. "See you outside?"
“See you outside,” Marianne agreed, giving a soft smile and slipping away.
Mare smiled back and quickly got changed to meet Marianne outside as quickly as humanly possible. She hesitated, but pulled on a fitted green dress that had never seen the light of day. Then threw on baggy white sweater.
Finally ready, she ran outside.
Marianne turned at the sound of hurried footsteps. Her eyes landed on Mare, and completely unprepared for the sight of her in a skirt, she froze, eyes going wide.
Mare came to a slow stop under Marianne's gaze.
"Have I done something wrong?" She looked down at herself. "Oh gosh, I'm so sorry, I just thought since I've never worn it I might try since I know you wouldn't judge…" She ran a hand through her hair. "Let me just go change," she apologized and turned to leave.
Marianne hastened to grab hold of Mare's wrist and pull her right back. "Don't you dare go back and change– you look gorgeous. I just wasn't prepared for your dazzling beauty to hit me in the face for the fifteenth time today."
Mare went silent, staring at Marianne. She let her arm go limp in Marianne's grip and resisted taking a step forward.
The urge to kiss her was extremely hard to ignore.
"Thank you," she said instead with every ounce of sincerity in her body.
A grin bright enough to rival the sun lit up Marianne’s face. “You’re very welcome.”
Mare answered with a caring smile. She reached for Marianne's hand. "Please tell me you don't have to go home yet."
"You're coming with me, don't you remember? I have something for you," she reminded, gladly taking her girlfriend's hand.
"Right, of course," Mare laughed. "Let us go then."
