"Good morning everyone, and welcome to today's town meeting which I call to order." The Mayor said in her cheeriest fakest voice. She was overly happy. She enforced the happiness rule because she probably hated feelings. But everyone obeyed her laws and commands as if she was a dictator over our town. Everyone knew whatever she says goes. Though there were some who did disagree. But you never knew who it was because nobody ever wanted to do anything publicly. Recently though people had been dissappearing, just poof gone. Nobody sure where those unfortunate people went. But even if they wanted to mourn they couldn't, the slightest evidence of sadness would tick the mayor off.
Kristina sighed internally, putting on a fake smile to please the mayor. She looked around and wondered how she could try to sneak away from the meeting this time. Her foot tapped against the ground and she thought about her friend and mom.
Steven wore a neutral expression No use trying to smile. He had learned long ago that a fake smile looked worse than a scowl on him. He casually check his phone for the time and sighed quietly. From beneath his sweatshirt he pulled out a worn and lightly faded book. Les Miserables. The miserable. The book fascinated him, though he didn't know why. He flipped throught the pages, reading the script inside, wondering at its craftsmanship.
Jake rolled in his eyes and slouched down out of sight in the back row. He really didn't care or wanted to be here. the meetings were absolutely boring. Nothing ever happened and nobody ever said anything.
Kristina stood up slowly, walking to the back row and sitting down on the floor behind the row. She leaned against the back of one of the chairs and closed her eyes, planning her escape from the town meeting.
Jake slipped down to the ground then pulled himself under the bench to the other side of the bench then saw the girl there. "Um what are you doing?"
Lea groaned in annoyance, she hated these meetings, why couldn't she be left alone? why did the mayor insist on having these if no one cared enough to show up? She found an empty seat in the back and plastered on her best overjoyed smile she could muster
Kristina opened one of her eyes slowly "I'm planning my escape from this boring meeting.." She mumbled, glancing over at the guy before closing her eye again and finishing her plan.
"Vent over there leads to an alley, it is already open the door is just placed on a bit." He whispered to her.
"Sounds good, better than my plan." She opened her eyes again and smiled at the guy "You coming?"
"Yeah." he replied then crawled to the vent.
She smiled and crawled after him, happy to get out of the meeting.
He opened the vent then crawled out then stood up when he was in the alley.
Kristina scrambled through the vent before standing up next to the guy "I suppose I should thank you. So…Thanks." She smiled and held out her hand "I'm Kristina,"
he shook her hand. "I am jake and you're welcome."
"Nice to meet you Jake," She looked around the alleway and nodded "As nice as this place is, I better get as far away from the meeting as I can. Less chance that they'll find me."
"Alright bye. Oh also I suggest no public places." he said then ran off.
kill me kill me kill meeeeee she begged in her head as the meeting went on. Something about joy and happiness and the towns best intentions flitted around in conversation
She nodded and started to walk back to her house, putting on another fake smile so that she seemed happy.
Steven watched them out of the corner of his eye. Shist. he thought, If I follow it will only be a distraction.
Zara walked around town with a smirk on her face. She had left right after the meeting started. She love disobeying the rules. The rush of adrenaline and the thrill would always be worth getting caught. She saw two others who had snuck out of the meeting. A boy and a girl. Zara leaned against the wall. "You two snuck out too?" She asked with the smirk still on her face.
Kristina jumped and glanced at the girl, smiling and nodding "Yeah," She said simply, looking around and nodding again.
