Very aware that the man was watching her, April reached it a tentative hand for the beautiful mare to sniff, smiling to herself.
"Ah, she likes you." He rubbed a hand on April's back. The horse huffed, and licked her palm.
April’s eyes widened at the sudden touch, her heart stumbling over its usual steady rhythm. “Yeah— I’m glad,” she managed, her breathlessness seeping into her voice.
"Here." He offered her a strong hand to hoist her up onto the saddle.
She gladly accepted, grinning down at him once she had mounted.

He gripped tthe lip of the saddle and pulled himself up in a swift movement, settling down behind her. "M'home isn't too far,"
(Lmao)
She wriggled backwards a tiny bit, until her back was pressed up against his front. “Are you sure you’re okay to ride? You had a lot to drink..”
He rest his chin on the natural hunch where the spine of her chest merged with her neck. His tainted breath left a warm tickle. "I've ridden this horse unconscious off sherry," he chuckled breathily. "You and I… We're safe.."
April shivered, but not because of the cold. “If you say so..”
He took the reigns after curling his arms in front of her waist, and edged the horse onto the streets.
April had to consciously refrain from leaning back against him, mentally scolding herself for her lack of self-restraint. She cleared her throat, focusing on the road ahead. “So, Cruz.. tell me a bit about yourself.”
"I was born in Cataluña," he replied, his slur making him a little hard to understand. "I have a sister, Amabelle. She got married a little while back, to.. Major Daniels's aide de campe Mr. Faucette. Do you know him?"
She shook her head with a smile. “Carry on.”
"Well, there's that." He snapped the reigns, and the horse burst off in a run.
A tiny noise of surprise tore itself from April’s mouth, and she laughed, exhilarated.
His shoulders didn't quite flank her, but their steady firmness provided a sense of security at their flying speed, and a source of warmth against the cold winds.
She didn’t bother shouting anything against the wind, only gripped the sides of the mare with her knees as they flew through the streets, allowing herself to feel a heightened sense of freedom.
Cruz's chin perched on her shoulder. His home was more nestled in a swath of woods on a hill, a place where one could see the dying lights of the small city through ribbons of tree trunks. He came to a slower pace and rode his horse into the warm, hay-carpeted barn.
April inhaled deeply, craning her head to soak in her surroundings.
Cruz slid himself off the saddle, then opened his arms for her to slide off into.
Hesitation flickered briefly in her eyes, before she was sliding off and into his arms.
He curled his arms around her to steady her til her feet were planted safely on the ground. "There.."
He was so close— and so warm— that she had a difficult time tearing herself away, but she managed eventually.
He looped his arm around hers, and walked her outside to his home.
She couldn’t help but lean into him, grinning.
John's exhale shook with a small laugh. His eyes settled softly on her face. "Why?"
"I'm never sure of how… far you want to go, per se, at any moment…" And she was always full speed ahead.
André let out a small sigh. "You know this is at your speed," he reminded gently.
She couldn’t help but lean into him, grinning.
That made the drunken man giggle a little, while his unsteady hands fumbled to unlock the door.
April reached out to guide his clumsy fingers.
