"Pierre.." She sighed slowly. That's all she said, what she could say. She wrapped him tightly in a hug.
"Pierre.." She sighed slowly. That's all she said, what she could say. She wrapped him tightly in a hug.
“I missed you..” he murmured, his mouth in her hair. “And it’s only been two weeks…”
She laughed quietly, pushing crudely cut hair behind her ear. Edonine made no comment.
He pulled away, his hands on her shoulders as he looked her over. "How are you?" An unasked question lingered in the air between them.
She exhaled slowly, holding his arms, "Thinking of you constantly."
His heart surged at the comment. "What happened to your hair?"
"I cut it," she murmured a little quieter.
"I can see that," he said gently, teasingly. "Why? Don't get me wrong– it suits you, but why?"
"I think you can assume, surely..?"
He blinked, then realization dawned on his face. "No.. Edonine–"
She nodded slowly. "Yes.."
"Edonine– you can't–" He pulled back, real, tangible fear flickering in his eyes. "You can't do that to yourself."
"I was scared for you!" She confessed. "I– I had to do something, Pierre, I couldn't let you go and sit here and wonder if I'd ever get that letter about your funeral!" She exhaled.
His heart broke for her. Again. "Edonine– war is hell– I'd rather have you safe, here, than out there. Please for the love of god, listen to me," he pleaded, no, begged. "I can't watch you get hurt."
"Please don't make me," she held his arms, pressed against him while she pleaded. "I need to be with you. I need to make sure you're safe. I need you."
Each word she uttered struck him like a bullet in the heart. I need you.. Those words would continue to echo in his brain for a very long time. He bowed his head.
Edonine touched his cheek like she had done before he left two weeks ago. "Look at me, Pierre.." She spoke quietly.
Pierre did as she instructed, and his eyes were shadowed with sorrow.
She stroked the side of his face. "You're such a good person, Pierre.."
Pierre leaned into her touch, but shook his head.
She pulled him down. And just in an instant, they were kissing.
Pierre wasn’t sure how it happened, but her lips were crashing up against his and his arms were snaking around her waist, pulling her closer— he held her like he was afraid she might break. He kissed her as if she was going to be his undoing.
And the sun cast bars across their feet, kissed their touching toes with warmth. The world held its breath and it was just them. Simply them in a bubble, and for a moment nothing else mattered.
He pulled away so that his mouth was only a hairs breadth away from her soft, inviting lips, murmuring sweet words. “Edonine..” He was hazy with euphoria, veins pumped full of adrenaline.
"Yes?" She replied in barely above a whisper. She kept her eyes closed, gently reeling from the contact still, relishing, the sensation that she was loved.
“Say my name again..” His eyes swept over each of her features, aligned so beautifully; she was a marvel of nature and he couldn’t stop staring.
Her eyes opened a slit, flickered from his chin, lips, nose, and finally to meet his eyes, dilated and burning with affection. "Pierre.."
Her voice was like music to his ears, and his name— his name sat so perfectly in her mouth, he wanted to hear her utter it again and again. His mouth pressed against hers once more, fleetingly but filled with an urgency, a passion.
Her calloused hands clamped onto his shoulders, and her breath shook out of her nose, shook with each heavy beat of her heart.
His hand found her chin, tilted her face up into the light, fingers skimmed the length of her jaw. “I didn’t dare to hope— I didn’t dare to hope that any of this would ever happen..” His voice was low, quiet.
