“It’s true. Believe it or not,” Sterling said with a shrug.

"I'll chooe not to."

“And why is that?” Sterling asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

"Because it's how I was told to think and it's too much work to try and break my own cycle of self doubt."

“Well… I think the effort would be well worth it,” Sterling said softly.

"That's what everyone says." She rolled her eyes.

“But I’m not everyone, am I? You said it yourself: We’re each other’s love interests in whatever crazy movie we’re in.”

"Yeah but that doesn't mean you have to agree with me!"

“Hm, but in this case, I want to agree with you,” Sterling said, winking at her.

"Really now? Which head are you saying that from? Top or bottom?" (I don't usually verbalize these thoughts but they're too funny not to use.)

(It took me a while to figure out what you meant… I’m not upset with that fact, either. Lol.)

Sterling raised an eyebrow at her. “Very funny. The top, thank you very much.”

"Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night." She bowed to a mock audience.

“You should make jokes like that,” Sterling said. “I mean, maybe less sexual, but otherwise it was better than your others.”

"Yeah but that's my sense of humor. Bad, dark, and sexual. Pick your favorite!"

“Dark, please,” Sterling chuckled. “I actually enjoy dark humor.”

"Well, dark humor's like food. Not everyone gets it."

Sterling laughed once, loudly. “I wasn’t actually expecting you to make a joke yet!”

"Oh so if you were you wouldn't have laughed? Rude! I should push you in the lake for that!"

“No, I still would have laughed!” Sterling assured her, laughing again.

"Okay, here's one. What's the difference between a pregnant 14 year old and the fetus inside her? They're both thinking 'oh shit my mom is gonna kill me.' "

Sterling snorted. “All right, that one was pretty good, too.”

"There's more where that came from! How many dead babies does it take to change a light bulb? Must be more than 9 because my basement is still dark."

Anyway!)

“I’ll race you to the water!” Sterling suddenly challenged her with a grin as he stood.

"What? No fair! You got a headstart!" She bolted down the beach, kicking off her shoes as she went.

Sterling laughed as he ran. This was fun, and a much needed fun at that. His mind had started to slip to the place where he remembered things that he didn’t want to.

As an assassin, she had learned to be fast and quite nimble, easily leaping over things without breaking her step.

Cassandra passed him, and he stared after her in slight shock. “How are you winning???”

"I'm an assassin sweetheart! Being fast is pretty much in the job description!" She laughed.
