Sterling winked at her again as they reached their spots. “All right. I wonder what we’re in store for.”

"Probably something bad but hey, I could be wrong."

Sterling was about to reply when a loud, piercing whistle interrupted him. He looked up to see the headmaster of the college standing in front of the group of young adults, his hands clasped behind his back.

“Some of you may have heard about what happens during this week of meeting your peers,” he started, speaking into the microphone placed in front of him. His voice boomed from speakers placed around the campsite, out of sight from any curious eyes.

"Secret speakers. Clever." Cassie muttered under her breath.

“Well, I’m sure that some of it is correct, but not all of it. You may have heard that we make things really easy to figure out — most likely coming from students who have won in the past. You also may have heard that it is impossible to solve the puzzle — most likely from the losers. In either case, you’d be wrong. It is not simple, but it certainly is not impossible,” the headmaster spoke.

"Well that depends on both the scenario and the person." Someone shushed her in front and she shut her mouth, blushing bright red.

“This week, you will be looking for clues about the mystery that you must solve. The details of which will be revealed at dinner tonight.

“You have already been split into pairs, as you should know. I would recommend staying with your partner for as much time as you can between morning and curfew.”

Quite a few groans came from the crowd of people who didn't like their partners. Cass was just happy that she'd been placed with a cute one. A smart cute one at that.

The director raised an eyebrow at the students. “It’s not a requirement, but it would help if you want to win free food for the entire year.

Gasps, cheers, and whispers ripped through the crowd. So that was the prize this year.

“Now that’s he kind of excitement hat I want to see you all take this with. Keep that in mind as you hunt for clues.

“As for your schedules, you will find them on your bunks in your cabins. Each person’s will be slightly different, but you and your partner will have the same timing.”

Cass cracked her knuckles. Finding clues and figuring out codes was practically her job. Victims never liked to make finding them very easy.

“As for today, dinner is at the same time and in the same place for everybody. Seven o’clock sharp, in the dining hall,” the director told them. “Curfew is at midnight. And that’s all that I have for you. You are dismissed.”

The crowd burst into chatter, friends talking about what they'd do if they won or theorizing on what the mystery was.

Sterling turned to Cassie with a grin. “Free food for a year. Sounds like perfect motivation for a group of college students to take someone or something seriously.”

"It certainly is. They don't have to live off Ramen for a year." She laughed.

“Ah, Ramen… One of two things that will get me through this year if I don’t win?” Sterling sighed.

"If I don't win, I don't care. But I do know I'll have to be careful as to not to die tonight."

"You don't even want to know what the other thing getting me through the year will be?"

"Only if you want to tell me." She chuckled.

"Well, I was going to make a joke and quote something I found on Tumblr, but now you ruined my fun," Sterling grumbled, pouting.

"Oops. Sorry. I'm a bit of a life ruiner. Also a life ender but we don't talk about that part."

Sterling chuckled. "Okay, then. Do you want me to tell you my joke?"

"Yeah sure go ahead."

"… I can't. Sorry. I'm not feeling it right now…"

"Oh, um…" This is awkward… "Okay, I guess."

Sterling chuckled and nudged her playfully. "I'm teasing you. Don't worry."

She shot him a playful glare. "How rude."

"Sorry, Cass, it's my nature to joke," Sterling laughed lightly.

"Yeah, I noticed. I'm an assassin, I don't know how to joke." She chuckled.
