"I…" Jane stuttered, thinking of how she wanted to word her next sentence. "You are a new start for me too."

"I was with another man before… but… he did not treat me well. He contained me in the house and did not allow me to go out and be in the world. I began to direct my thinking to learn what made up an object. To… what makes up living things. I left him and saw the world in a new light," she explained, purposefully not drawing out her story too long.

"You're awake," Edonine croaked sleepily from the hall. Her chartreuse eyes looked dull in the faint candlelight, hair stringy and messy with fitful sleep. Her index finger sat curled through the ring of a candle plate, the dingy flame trembling back and forth. Delta lifted his crest to greet his owner.

Pierre turned, sympathy shadowing his eyes as soon as they fell on Edonine. Delta's ominous parroting was still fresh in his mind…
"Go back to sleep," he urged her gently. "You must be exhausted."

@blue_topaz

Pierre grimaced sympathetically, recalling the many years he'd gone with barely any rest. "You should at least lie down," he coaxed, stepping towards her.

@blue_topaz

"Alright," he agreed, reach up to rub at his sore bicep. She looked so… worn out. Because of him, or something else? Either way, he wished he could somehow make it better.

@KalamariCakes

"What's keeping you up?" She replied quietly. She had to look up, as he was taller than her. Against the candle and under shadow, her sunspots looked like flecks of obsidian.

Pierre couldn't help notice how, even so exhausted, Edonine could be……. well, for lack of better words, beautiful. Even dulled from lack of sleep, her eyes still held a sort of allurement, drawing him in..
"The pain," he admitted, scattering his forbidden thoughts. "And the flashbacks of the accident."

@KalamariCakes

Edonine answered with a simple hm, glancing at the infantile fire of the candle. "I'll get you a glass of water too. Delta wasn't keeping you awake was he?" She began to walk to the kitchen, "He gets…" Edonine exhaled very slowly. She knew. "He gets pretty ominous at night,"

@blue_topaz

Pierre almost stumbled, having to lean against the wall for a moment. "Yeah," he agreed quietly. "Yeah, he can. I…." He was unsure how much to say, what to do. "I'm sorry."

@blue_topaz

Pierre bit his lip, glancing away for a moment. How was he supposed to say this? "Delta… started relaying a voice.. A voice saying that there was too much blood, a voice in agony.."

@blue_topaz

Pierre fumbled to help the situation, cursing his big mouth. "I– I'm sorry. He was just muttering– I got closer– I heard–"

@blue_topaz

Pierre's words died in his mouth. For a second, he felt the strange urge to wrap her up in a hug, which he knew would not be appreciated.

His caretaker stared into the darkness, the underside of her face sparsely illuminated. A memory was stealing her away from the present, kidnapping her to another time. It made the strong woman appear… Vulnerable.

@blue_topaz

Acting quickly but keeping his movements gentle, Pierre stepped up to her and lay a hand on her shoulder, carefully leading her towards the kitchen. "Let's get you some water."

@KalamariCakes

"Water.." She whispered, "Right," she kept her words quiet and subdued, passing through the threshold of the doorway into the kitchen. She swayed on her feet like she had been stricken by a fist. Edonine set the candle on the countertop.

@blue_topaz

Pierre moved to intercept her, guiding her over to the kitchen table. "Here, sit, I'll get you some," he instructed in a soothing voice, turning to find the glasses.

@blue_topaz

"No problem," he replied softly, locating two glasses and filling them both with cool water. He approached her and gingerly pressed one into her hand, sitting down across from her. "I souldn't have mentioned anything, I'm sorry."
