Hey! This is pretty much my first time using these forums, so apologies if this isn't the right place for this kind of post.
This is something I've been thinking about developing for a while. It's derived from an attempt at a book I started writing when I was 11, though the plot has gone through several changes and at this point the only similarities between the two are some character names. This is just a brief overview of what I've been thinking as a general basis for a story; I have a bit more, but I'll maybe share that later on if this is well-received. Here you go:

Ten years ago, the Mer rose up from the depths of the ocean to reclaim the earth. Rapidly evolving temperatures gave way to fatalistic floods across the globe; the Mer, using their technological advances and supernatural abilities, accelerated the flooding, leading to a total submergence of the planet. Humans, those of which hadn't drowned in the first stage of the Mer's cleanse, were slaughtered by the masses, the only survivors being those needed for food or labor, the elite who bargained with their new aquatic overlords, and lastly, the small population living aboard several space colonies orbiting the planet.
The year is now 2041. The Mer have successfully infiltrated all corners of the earth. What remain of the humans exist in two separate groups. The majority live as animals once did; some in undersea zoos, some in farms, and many as workers, either on the last remnants of land, or, for the less fortunate, underwater, condemned to live out the rest of their lives breathing through artificial gills in an environment completely unsuited to them. The elite, alternatively, live on the Luxury Liners, eight larger-than-life cruise ships that patrol the sea. Meanwhile, since the Mer's invasion, the people living in space have developed a society of their own. Individual stations have joined together to create the Zodiac, a multi-purpose, highly advanced vessel, which has been developing a plan to rescue the remaining humans on earth and bring them to the only place left they can be free from the Mer: space.

So there you have it! I've done a bit of research on books of this type, and I've yet to see anything even close to a mermaid-based apocalypse, so I'm hoping my idea comes across as somewhat unique. Let me know what you think!

-K :)

Thank you everyone! I didn't expect the feedback to be this good. I'll let you know when I get started and/or when I finish.
