Some back ground
- Vanessa was born less than five months after Goose died, meaning Maverick was NOT in a good headspace
- This severely affected his parenting, as he was at a point where he was trying to fill the void in Bradley's life left by Goose, coupled with his lifestyle as a pilot, it only got worse as she grew
- She was constantly stuck between her parent's awkward relationship, if she complained about her father to her mother than they would fight, and things would be awkward between her and her father next time, he would ask her about her mother's relationships
- She at least had her "Aunt" Carole and "Uncles" from the rest of the 86' class, they tried to make up the difference though the results were generally the same
- Her one constant was her Best friend/Babysitter Bradley...until he and Mav fought, then they each fought with her and the next day Bradley was gone
- From there her and her father's relationship soured and as consequence so did hers with her mother
- In real life, Maverick "pulling" Rooster's papers would not necessarily have set him back 4 years, if he attended a civilian university and enrolled in Navy ROTC, or graduated and then attended OCS. He would enter as an officer, thus making it possible for him to compete for selection as an aviator.
- According to Rooster's military file he graduated from The University of Virginia in 2009. It also shows 4 years of prior enlisted service, rising to the rate of HT2. There is, however, a contradiction in that the start of his active enlisted service is listed as 2006.
