I have my main plot, which I will explain, but I am struggling to find some interesting subplots.

The plot: Zofia sets out to find her birth mother, who turns out the be Caenya, the "goddess of logic". (I can explain the "goddess' part, but it's not too relevant.) Along the way she meets a vampire, befriends him and takes him along her journey. But the vampire, Alwyn, can't contain his hunger for blood and bites Zofia. As Zofia struggles with this, Alwyn leaves her alone to find her mother. She does, eventually. But Caeyna has hated vampires since she was born, due to past experiences with them. To Caeyna, the only logical explanation is to get rid of Zofia and any other vampires she crosses. So, Zofia has to run in fear of being killed by her own mother.

It's a bit more complex than I've stated, but that's the main idea. Now throw some obstacles in my story! Give me some twisted, fun, interesting subplots to play around with. I'm aiming for a dark fantasy feel. Also, this will be my NaNoWriMo project, but I started really late…

Np! When I need to add more twists to a story, I usually do so by adding in more characters XD You can also think of subplots like side-quests in a video game. For example, maybe your Mc acquires another traveling companion who happens to be searching for their family as well. And then that character could also come back in later to support/rescue the MC after her mother attacks her? Or something like that.
Or you could introduce a side villain, who's maybe a bit more comical than a real evil person but still does a good job of getting in your MC's way. Defeating them could give your MC more confidence, OR your MC could befriend the side villain, depending on what kind of message you want to send.
Those are just some things that came to mind right away, I guess you might have considered similar ideas already but I thought I'd throw them out there anyway. :)
