fisherman, blacksmith, weaver, tailor, builder, law enforcer of some kind, writer, educator (and this will probably be a common job since magic probably needs to be taught kinda individually), oiler, etc

@kat_i_am

Yep definitely
and I'm thinking the currency within the town is probably like… bartering, but on a larger scale there needs to be some form of standard currency
but is education expensive? Is there standard basic edu but then magic tutoring which is expensive?

@kat_i_am

WAIT CAN I PLEASE HAVE A CHARACTER WHO IS AN APPRENTICE TO A SHIPMAKER OR TRAVELING MERCHANT SO HE PUNS AND CALLS IT AN APPRENTICESHIP

@WriteOutofTime

i'm thinking that since you want magic to be so commonplace, it might be part of the core requirement of basic education?
okay wait!!
maybe the 6 main magics are taught as a prereq
and then its expensive to specialize because you have to pay for a private, highly trained tutor
so the tutors are high class essentially
and i agree, i think a standard currency is a good idea

@kat_i_am

also
let's consider
a cast
that's mostly females

I was reading the Riddlemaster of Hed, a book that my dad loved when he was younger, but tbh I found it Boring. And there were like…. NO female characters? And I realize the same is true for LoTR and I wonder if one reason I'm not a huge fan of those books is because there's no girls and it's just BORING

I think studying ABOUT the magics will be a prereq, but they aren't actually required to do magic because it does require sacrificing something (thoughts, original ideas, memories, all that jazz)

on the subject, what's the general belief system surrounding gender, sexuality, and marriage?

Update: YOU are the character

i would die within the first five minutes of the novel
not even from magic just from like falling off the side of the boat during my apprenticeship
but it'd be a glorious death
i wouldn't even be salty about it

I'm reading the Great Library series by Rachel Caine, and same-sex relationships are TOTALLY normalized? And I have a headcanon that's semi-canon that Glaine is ace/aro because, I quote "Glaine had shown interest in romantic partners of either gender."
But it's totally normal and I LOVE IT
so I think that will be kinda like how it is in my book. And because it's normal there's no angst over not being heterosexual
Marriage….. I'm thinking it's pretty important, so there's a lot of courting in society. Some marriages are arranged, others are just…. hey we're in love so we gonna get married
And generally, sex is reserved for after marriage, and you'll get some judgement if you participate in premarital sex, but it won't ruin you the way it does in like….. medieval Europe

you've lived on the beach your entire life and you can't even swim?
Sarah
I was gonna give you water powers too. Well, your character would have an affinity for them
SPEAKING OF
magical affinities reduce how much you have to sacrifice to learn the magic

very good move
i think it'll make the world more unique, because wayyy too many fantasies center around
heterosexual marriage
which is lame because it doesn't provide a lot of variance

okay i would honestly love this though
although take many artistic liberties with this character because my personality is kinda bland
i like the idea of magical affinities!! it makes magic seem a bit more normalized and not inherently evil

Right??
Also on the hyper-courting culture
I have real liFe ExPEriENcE it's SO much fun love it
so that'll be so fun to write I'll just mock my school's dating culture

@kat_i_am

hEY HEY HEY

What's shaken bacon?

Okay so
Fantasy with a great magic system (page 1…. in the old system this thread would be two pages so it's a FAST read)
set in a TROPICAL setting

@kat_i_am

UHHH
okay
so what I have so far….
My protag is male, and he's trying to revert the process of his sister becoming a Nevari.
But really that's all I have plotwise
