But I don't know where to start. I want to write a fantasy story that has a lot to do with connection. Connection between characters and the world around them. Any ideas?

You can make a magical world where everyone has a purpose. But the one character doesn’t fit in. They don’t understand who they are and feel like they don’t belong in ‘their’ place. They lie to their strict parents about leaving for a better job but instead leaves for a magical journey and finds a secret camp full of people like him/her. You can also add a love interest if you want. It would fit for the romance to end badly but build up the characters personality and then the character can experience a journey of finding themselves and realising that after some time everything goes the way it’s supposed to and eventually you’ll belong in the place you need to belong. Sorry there’s not much fantasy here, I’m not a big fan of fantasy myself. But this is just a little idea of the plot.

Fantasy takes a lot of effort and planning, so don't rush it. Work on it and search for ideas, but don't stress over plotting and developing it super fast. Play around, but let it simmer and grow on it's own too. Most of my good books take YEARS to become what they're meant to be, but it's totally worth it.

As for tips and plot help: read lots of fantasy. Study it and figure out what you like and don't like about the story. What works and what drives you nuts. Play with ideas you find or think of while you read. Ask ALL the 'What If?" questions. Think of the stories and things you always want to read about, and then write about those.
