i have a book that i started writing in around 2014 and i want to publish it soon, but i basically have the same test concept as The Thinning, even though i thought of the idea before the movie came out, everyone always equates my book to it and my friends and family think i ripped it off and it really bugs, but the test isn't the main theme in my book, but it's a close second/third

Should i just keep it in and block the haters,

Should i get rid of it entirely and basically rebuild my society, which would take a long time plus though i like my concept

Or should i manipulate the concept so that it's less likely to be equated to The Thinning aka plot holes and useless characters galore, and if so could i have some tips to make it different, I've thought of everything

Much obliged

Well if you want to mix things up a bit you certainly can but you're right that that will be an arduous process. Okay so you didn't publish the idea before youtube did, So what? Youtube doesn't own the concept anymore than you do, and to be fair lots and lots of really great stories are really similar to each other. But again, who cares? Everybody in the world's skeletons are really similar to each other but we don't go around telling each other "Hey you stole that idea from Adam and Eve". Just like how people all look different in spite of being basically the same under their skin your story will be different in its subtleties, its characters, it's dialogue, it's je ne sais quoi. Four years it's a lot of work and dedication to put into a story and I would never recommend you throw it away. And your story has something the special that no other book or movie does, it was written by you, your voice, your style, your heart.
I mean I don't want to lie to you, when you put this out there most people will probably blow it off for being a rip off, basically you need to know that you will always be the "Divergent" to youtube's "Hunger Games", but still this is something you obviously really care about so like… do what you want man, this isn't about what everyone else thinks. It's not gonna be easy and it's probably not going to be fun but, isn't it worth it?

Yes it is worth it, thank you so much, i really needed that
This story is one of my favorites and i can't imagine it being any different, especially because I've been working on it so long and the test trope makes so much sense for the story at hand

Thank you
