If there’s one thing I pride myself on, it’s music knowledge. Every genre, man. Can’t live without it.

For all my books, I make playlists to go along with them. This way, I don’t lose my inspiration while writing, and I can clearly keep an atmosphere consistent. This helps me write genres I’m less accustomed to, because it greatly helps in keeping consistent setting and feeling. Need any of that? I can help you.

Tell me about what kind of atmosphere you wanna create. What kind of book you wanna write. What kind of feel you wanna give. I will do my best to represent that through music, and make you a playlist of your own :)

@Kefi

RIGHT. so if you've got the time, i'm writing a fictional fantasy story that focuses on a bunch of different royal houses in different kingdoms, all of whom are terrible people who slowly tear each other apart for power as the story goes on. It's a blast. ANYWAYS, it is one of my darker stories, there's a lot of unhealthy relationships, manipulative people, and LOTS of money involved.
For inspo, here's some songs that remind me of the story/different characters in my story:

  • Silver + Gold, Elliot M0ss
  • The World is Not Enough, Garbage
  • Everything I Wanted, Billie Eilish
  • Fire on Fire, Sam Smith
  • Everybody Lies, Jason Walker
  • No Time to Die, Billie Eilish

If you can recommend any songs I could add on to that playlist, I will love u forever and ever.

(DISCLAIMER: The majority of these songs are explicit)

Slower, Sadder Dudes:

  • *Revolver, Vian Izak
  • Help Me Out, Alicks (instrumental, sort of)
  • Walk, Kyddiekafka (instrumental/beats)
  • NFWMB, Hozier
  • *Talk, Hozier
  • Out Of The Cold, Amos Lee
  • *Feel Good, Matt Maeson
  • *Got It In You (Acoustic), BANNERS (message is kinda happy, but it’s got the atmosphere)
  • Morning Star, Vian Izak —
  • *Bank On The Funeral (again, stripped is better imo, but it’s up to you), Matt Maeson —
  • Things Will Get Better, Vian Izak —
  • King (Acoustic), SAINT PHNX —

Faster Friends:

  • We Don’t Need Sleep, Kublaii
  • *Sunlight, Hozier
  • *Achilles Come Down, Gang of Youths
  • *Hallucinogenics (stripped version or not, although I suggest stripped), Matt Maeson
  • *Way down We Go, KALEO
  • Mr. Rattlebone, Matt Maeson
  • *Fly Away With Me, Tom Walker
  • Grave Digger, Matt Maeson
  • Lightning Strike (What If This Storm Ends), Snow Patrol
  • Lost Love, Kublaii —
  • Glory and Gore, Lorde — (personally I don’t like this song, but it’s up to opinion lol)

Ones That Give Me That Unsettling Vibe:

  • The Mind Electric, Miracle Musical
  • it’s ok, you’re ok, Bonjr (instrumental/beats)
  • Terry’s Taxidermy, Teddy Hyde — (weird song man, the lyrics are wack)

Aannggyy (and some swagger):

  • *Horns, Bryce Fox —
  • *Low Lays The Devil, The Veils —
  • Thank God I’m Not You, Himalayas — (has that grungy guitar)
  • No Mercy, Zayde Wølf —

Ones I Apparently Can’t Choose A Category For:

  • Hello My Old Heart, The Oh Hellos — (slow to upbeat, and the message is depressing as hell)
  • Mykonos, Fleet Foxes —
  • Astronaut (Acoustic), Vian Izak —

(The ones marked with a “*” are ones that I think will suit best. The others are just… there)

Also, if you’d like to explore some others that I don’t suggest, there are a few artists you can check out more songs from. A lot of Hozier’s songs hold that bleak or baleful atmosphere, especially on his Wasteland, Baby! album (with the exception of a few others and “Almost (Sweet Music)” which is upbeat and happy, and one of my favorite songs normally). Matt Masson certainly has that sort of sad/anger looked for in most songs. Especially ones like Bank on The Funeral, the stripped version specifically.

@LittleRiver local_movies

(If you’d like more, I have at ton, but I didn’t wanna just overload u with music lol. I also have some angry ones, if you want to incorporate that sort of savage, backstabby vibe)

@Kefi

(YES pls overload me with music! Also. I’m about to put these all on a playlist and listen to them- thank u so much!!!!)

@Kefi

You just recommended about an hour and twenty minutes of music… Dang that’s impressive. Luckily I gotta drive for a few hours, so 😁✌️

@Kefi

Okay so I listened to the first songs you recommended on that playlist twice while I was driving, and bro. It’s kind of scary how good you are at this 😂

@LittleRiver local_movies

omg thank you ( ^ω^ ) I’m so glad you like them! If you ever need any more then I’ll totally oblige. After all, it’s something I greatly enjoy doing. Just gives me an awesome excuse to research a ton of music.

@sock group

I would like a playlist, please :D
Okay! So I'm writing a fantasy story including magic, pirates, royalty, a devastating war, and prophecies. The basic plot is that the main characters are going on a quest to try and find some magical weapons that are probably the only things that can save their kingdom. They don't get along too great, and their personalities clash sometimes. Also, one of them sort of goes mad! Fun, fun.
Some songs that sort of match the vibe I'm going for are:

  • I Found by Amber Run
  • Dear Fellow Traveler by Sea Wolf
  • King by Foreign Figures
  • Take Flight by Louie Zong
  • Win by Ateez

I would love if you added to this lil' playlist if it's not too much trouble. :)

@LittleRiver local_movies

Just wanna preface— I did go more the folk route with this:

Slower Dudes:

  • In the Woods Somewhere — Hozier
  • Bottom of the River — Delta Rae
  • The Bug Collector — Haley Heynderickx
  • *Wooden Walls of this Forest Church — Lost In The Trees
  • *O Sleeper — The Oh Hellos
  • *Rivers and Roads — The Head and the Heart
  • *Just Your Memory — Johnyyswim / Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors / Penny and Sparrow
  • Call It Dreaming — Iron & Wine

Faster Friends:

  • *Battle Cry — The Family Crest
  • *Who Are You, Really? — Mikky Ekko
  • *Thus Always To Tyrants — The Oh Hellos
  • The Moon Will Sing — The Crane Wives
  • *Howl — Florence + The Machine
  • Monsters Calling Home — Run River North
  • *There is Something in the Forest — Emilíana Torrini / The Colorist Orchestra

Ones that start slow and build:

  • *Ship in a Bottle — Steffan Argus
  • *Liar — The Arcadian Wild
  • *We Have It All — Pim Stones
  • In Our Bedroom After The War — Stars
  • Constellations — The Oh Hellos
  • *Mountain Song — Little Chief
  • *Blood On My Name — The Brothers Bright

(Ones that fit best have a “*” next to them. Others are there just… cuz, i guess)

@sock group

Thanks for the song recommendations from before! I found several that went with what I needed and are now added to that book's playlist.
Now, I hope it's okay to ask for more 'cause boi howdy am I a sucker for new songs. Anywho, I'm looking for some sky-related song recommendations. Songs that talk about or are related to the sun, moon, stars, or planets would all be appreciated (even if it's only in the title). 'Constellations' by The Oh Hellos as well as 'The Moon Will Sing' by The Crane Wives would be some great examples (and were some of my favorites from the first playlist you gave me) Also! I'm not looking for any particular theme. Songs of all vibes are cool.
Take your time, and thanks a whole bunch! :D

@LittleRiver local_movies

:0 I have literally the PERFECT ARTIST for this. He is Sleeping At Last and he has so many songs about constellations, space missions, the planets themselves, etc. I super suggest checking out his Atlas: Space album and his Astronomy, Vol. 1. I wouldn’t say they explicitly talk about the planets they’re named after, but the thought of each one and the vibe it gives off is literally perfect. There’s also that song by Vian Izak called The Astronaut, and I especially love the acoustic version. They also have Starlit Summers Eve which is just beautiful, and Morning Star.
But then there are those songs that make you feel like you’re on an airship, sailing through the sky. Songs that make you feel like you’re riding a giant dragon through the clouds, and you can feel it. Call me a nerd, but I made a playlist exclusively for songs like that and it consists of mainly Are You Ready (On Your Own) by Distant Cousins, Learning to Fly by Hills x Hills, and Raging Fire by Phillip Phillips.

Though, if none of these are really the speed you’re going for, I have some more that sound very close to The Moon Will sing and Constellations. However, none are really sky-based except for Wind & Anchor by The National Parks, Rain Clouds by The Arcadian Wild, and Eurus by The Oh Hellos. I also have legit a TON of songs that fit the atmosphere of those, but don’t necessarily reference the sky or its contents. But if you want them, I’d be more than happy to share!

@sock group

:0 You're the best! So many songs! I think I've actually heard one of Sleeping At Last's songs (can't remember which one), and it was an amazing bop, so I'm sure his(?) others are great too. Thank you so much~

@LittleRiver local_movies

No problem! I love bringing some popularity to my favorite lesser-known artists :D. Sleeping At Last is generally known for most of his covers and his Enneagram songs (of which, Two is the song that first hooked me on his music). Every song of his is so beautifully composed and his Space series is generally my favorite, but the Oceans and the Land albums are super close runner-ups. Actually, you know what, I love all his music lmao. I’m so glad you like my recc’s! :D Thanks!

@croccin-champagne

oooohhhh my gosh this looks so cool. if you wouldn't mind, i'd love a playlist that keeps me in the vibe for writing!

brief summary: a teen girl with the ability to see and interact(verbally and physically) with ghosts moves to a weird little town in virginia that has, since it's founding, become home to various weird paranormal things, both in the townsfolk, and in the woods surrounding. not to mention the buildings. when her new sorta-girlfriend goes missing, she and her other friends from the private school she got into(on grades. she's also certain there was a diversity angle they wanted there) start an investigation into the recent disappearances spanning a month or so. there's a cult, weird things in the woods, all the good stuff.

general vibes: private school vibes, mystery vibes, chaotic teenagers, a sprinkling of eighties music would make sense, small town vibes, etc

i have absolutely no songs at all because i've never been able to find a playlist that fits at all lmao.
