The ability to blow up a mountain or to freeze time takes a life time of practice, but what if simple things like lighting a candle or cleaning a stained shirt or healing a small cut could be learned with a less than a days practice? For those that have played D&D, what if everyone could cast a cantrip or two? How could that affect the day to day life of the common people?

There would definitely have to be some new laws and rules placed in certain places. Like at school, a rule might be "NO FREEZING THE TEACHERS!" and many more things like that! People with certain powers, like cleaning a stained shirt like you said, wouldn't have to buy washers and dryers or go to the laundromat to clean their clothes! Its just simple things like that that could change out entire lives.

My friends and were hanging out together and we wanted to roleplay and we started coming up with the plot and it went something like this…

In a world where only some people are born with magic and others have none, a couple of really smart kids want a way to harness the magic in a tangible item that people without magic can obtain and learn to use. One of them has magic, the other two were thrown out of their magical families because they were what you might call a 'magical runt' and didn't have any despite their family tree. The boy with magic and the two girls work together to shape wood into a small delicate stick. They harness the boy's powers and place them into a single phoenix feather which they place inside the small stick. It's a long process and when their prototype is stolen they must create more in order to find it.

After describing the first couple sentences we realized, we had just come up with the creation of the wand. Pretty cool huh?

I actually have something like that, a third or so of the people in my story can do at least some low-level magic, and magic artifacts, machines and whatnot are in circulation too. At least in my story, it offers a lot more ways to get out of problems. However, the magic of the powerful people has to be that much more powerful, otherwise it throws the story off balance, like yes, someone can summon lightning, but they can only fend of so many people before they are overwhelmed. I think that having many or all of the people in your story being able to use magic adds a fun new dimension to it.

So, honestly, it would be chaotic. Like, think. Anyone? I do not trust that we wouldn't get a second Gridelwald/ Voldemort. Some people would not use magic well. We have nukes already, wouldn't something worse come next? I think that the concept is innocent, but it would only make things worse. Maybe there should be limits, like you can only heal, or manipulate an element, like water. I don't know how it would end out as. Thoughts?

Abigail Dara, I think your slightly wrong in this regard. yes, bad stuff would happen, but bad stuff happens without magic. I think that the characters in their world would survive, plus, people probably would find defenses against magical nukes. say, force fields.

Ok, yeah, I get it, but still… Hitler with magic? No. Just no.

I don't know how things would go. Maybe in a more civil universe, it would be ok, but not here.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I'm working on a story in which everyone has some magic potential, whether they choose to tap into it or not. I didn't originally write it so that everyone had magic, but when I started thinking about it, it made more sense for everyone to have something there. It works as long as there are major limitations. In what I'm writing, everyone can only tap into a specific type of magic, but magic is energy is rooted in life force, and therefore has a lot of limitations. Some magic is used for fighting, others for supporting, and some for mind tricks. It all works because there is some balance between how powerful a character is and what kind of weaknesses they have. However, a lot of people regard magic as "cheap tactics," and many people refuse to use it because of this.
It's kind of a different take on what you guys were talking about, but this is just the way I made "everyone has magic" work in my world. It's all about balance.

@kat_i_am

I think it also varies at the degree of magic/what type of magic. If you've read the manga/watched the anime My Hero Academia (okay technically superpowers but…), 80% of the world has some sort of superpower. They vary in power/use. Some people don't even choose to use their quirks. There are laws in place. And yeah, there are supervillains. But there are also superheros! So even if there's a power imbalance, eg Hitler with magic, there would hopefully be someone with strong magic who rises up against them.
