I have magicians, but need limits for their powers. What do you do?

Either place no limitations on them, i.e. make them effectively a minor deity that rarely makes an appearance, or give them a cursed effect that has something to do with their magic. Ice sorcerers slowly freeze to death the more they use their powers, fire sorcerers slowly burn alive the more they use their powers, shadow sorcerers slowly turn to gibbering shades the more they use their powers, etc. Very common, but very effective.

Thanks… wow… common, you say, but I don't think I've read that before, so not common enough. I'll have to tweak it somehow, but thanks! They are the main characters, though…

Main characters having such high stakes for potential downsides when using their powers sounds perfect for making sure they can't just use their magic to get out of every situation. :)
