Basically, anyone can be a wizard providing they have the dedication. Wizards spend hours in study to learn how magic works, and can be crippled if they lose their bonded item (an object that allows them to channel their magic). They have to cast spells perfectly as the formula is written and it leaves little room for error.
A sorcerer is born with magic in their blood. Through a magical bloodline they gain the ability to cast spells from memory and powers based on the bloodline they have. This is not always evident at birth, but can be noticeable by the age of five. They cast magic from memory and any motions they go through is done by what feels right rather than what is right. They tend to be emotional and prone to bouts of joy, anger, sorrow, or any other controlling emotion.
A witch calls upon a patron to grant her magic through a familiar. They can be male or female and gain a number of hexes as they grow in their power. These hexes range of harmful to helpful, but are always at the witch's disposal. Covens increase the strength of witches and are needed in order to perform certain rites and rituals.
A warlock is a witch who has forsaken the use of magic to heal and learn. They are more obviously evil and are the ones people most associate with witches. They function just as witches due but are more prone to darker arts that inflict horrible things on those who are the targets.

Any Questions?

@mckapo

oh sweet bit of information! will use as future reference for any magic involved stories I will use/

@mckapo

I've noticed that a lot of people sometimes get confused. Anyone willing to listen or has questions is welcome here.

Might I get your opinion on something? It has to do with this story I am writing and their is a high priestess who is a sorceress, probably the most powerful in terms of (natural)magic, and her putting a curse on my MMC that cuts him off from his genetic magic ( I guess he would be a sorcerer too).

Are you any good with magic systems…. and possibly lend me a hand if you are so inclined?

If she is a cleric as well as a sorceress, then here is my advice. Cleric spells are prayers to the gods/god but are not as devastating as requests made. If you have a religion, make her do it through a deity. I also suggest not stripping him of his magic, but make it to where he can't use it. Sorcerers sometimes don't use their powers or magic because of where it comes from.
My systems of magic isn't really too complex; just a difference between what I call arcane and divine magic. Arcane is what sorcerers, wizards, witches, magi, alchemists, and summoners use. They bend reality to their will through intelligence and personality. This is what most people think of when they think of magic.
As I said before, divine magic is used by clerics, oracles, paladins, and druids and is more of a prayer to the gods than a spell.
Spells also come with varying needs, these being verbal (words), somantic (gestures), material, and divine spells often require a focus. I base my system off the magic system of the RPG Pathfinder, which isn't too complicated if you want to check it out.

Hope this helps a little

Yes, the magic my MMC has isn't gone, he just can't use it. those that have the ability to see/ travel to the astral plane see chains that go throughout his body, and the curse manifests as a mini black hole where his eye would be (just for visualization, not a real black hole). And then the magic pools he can't use pools into his antlers (he's a stagyr, like satyr, but a stag).

anyway haha thank you for the info (:
