forum Locations/Landmarks in Deserts

I'm looking for ideas of landmarks or locations to put in a desert. It can be a mix of natural or man made.

Possibly a mountain with a city built into it, or some sort of obelisk that's basically a giant sundial

Uh, hm…
An oasis
a canyon
a river
the ruins of a dead city/village
a secret tunnel system
a strange place where the sand is a different color for some reason
a road of some kind (it would have to be raised or used a lot or the sand would cover it up)
a trail of markers of some kind instead of a road (for example a line of colored stakes, or large rocks, etc.

Cliff dewlers would be an interesting monument to see out in the desert, abandon mines, ghost towns, broken down well out, and wildlife. Rock formations, tumbleweeds, different type of cactus, and of course mountains or sand dunes (Depending on what type of desert your going for.).
