Hello, all! I just discovered this resource…I had not seen the Discussion tab, and I feel like a noob!

Not looking to waste time, here's my question. I want the majority of my story to happen in Portland, OR…however, here's my dilemma. I live in Idaho. I've been to Portland many times and will return many times but I am afraid that since I don't know the city I will have to invent things about it or invent it altogether, essentially…and part of my brain says that's not allowed, or something.

What would you do? would you just study Portland and learn a bunch of street names and locations andmake up what you can, or would you put things in a fictional city based on the real one?

Thanks, world!

I think you should study street names, famous places, etc. because I personally think it's cool to have real life places in a book. It never hurts to study a little. It would be nice to study a little about the place, although you don't need to worry too much because Portland is also in America, so not a ton of cultural change. Unlike if you were writing a book taking place in a different country, you wouldn't need to learn everything. Do what seems best.

I will give that a shot. I think that feels most logical as well even though it is still challenging. I also think it would be neat for the story to be rooted in real physical places.
