he eventually decided against it. let's not meet any other escaped prisoners or guards covered in blood, shall we?

after flipping it back inside itself and shoving it back in his boot, he shook out his hands.

"one."

At that moment, the guard stepped by them. Tessa lashed out, fist connecting with his abdomen in a flash. She, surprisingly, didn't break her knuckles as she did so.

as he buckled over, nik rushed behind him and threw his arms around the guard's neck.

"if you raise alarms, i will personally shove your gun so far up your ass you'll be coughing up shotgun shells for weeks. lay down and stay down, bitch."

he held onto his neck until he slumped, letting go as he did.

"lets ride. your knuckles good?"

She took off one of the brass knuckles and looks at her own, only finding slight bruising. "Nothing I can't handle," she said as she slipped the weapon back on. "Let's hurry before we get more than we bargained for." She looked down the hall to make sure no one else was there, then ushered for Nik to follow as she jogged down the hall.

he went after her, keeping an eye behind them as they went. they turned the last corner and the emergency exit was in view, only… guarded.

nik sighed quietly, and unclipped an unlabeled bottle and cloth from his bag.

"Oh, come on!" Tessa hissed under her breath, fishing through her coat, "We were so close!" Her fingers searched for the canister of sleep gas that she always had handy, though she and Nik would have to be extra careful to not breathe in the gas.

he wet the cloth, wrinkling his nose at the smell.

"they'll attack us first. might as well just dive in. on three?"

(sorry for taking so long to reply, I'm a bit preoccupied with making nametags for my dragons)

Tessa looked back at Nik, raising her brows. "What's that?" she asked, nodding at the thing in his hands. Her fingers latched onto the canister, ready to chuck it at a moment's notice.

(its alright!)

"chloroform. what's yours?" he replied, not looking up from tying the cloth around his hand so that it laid flat across his palm.

"Nighttime gas," she said, looking over at the group of guards. "If we don't breathe it in, I can knock their asses out while we make a run for it. If only I wore my mask…" she grumbled, fidgeting with the canister.

"convenient. you ready?" he shook out his hands again, peering around the corner.

"As I'll ever be," she said, a small smirk on her lips as she stood up slightly to a half-crouch, fingers on the cap of the canister so she could easily pop it off.

"alright. go." he mimicked her positioning, and spun around the corner to make a mad dash for the guards. they automatically drew their weapons, firing towards the pair.

nik dropped to the floor. he had gotten close enough. he managed to hook around on of the guards legs without getting pumped full of lead, which brought her crashing to the floor. as soon as she hit the ground, he leapt forward to press the tied cloth over her mouth and nose.

Tessa ducked and rolled, keeping herself from getting shot. She gritted her teeth when one bullet grazed her cheek, but she ignored the sting as she lept up and gave the guard that shot her a brass knuckle sandwich. Her other hand was still tucked beneath her coat, holding the canister. "Nik!" was her only warning as she pulled it out and popped off the cap, her other arm hooked around her mouth and nose. Some of the nearby guards tried to shoot her and scramble away, but they quickly grew sluggish from the close proximity of the released gas.

he looked over as she called his name, tucking his nose inside his shit as soon as he saw the canister. he stood to elbow a guard who attempted to grab at him, catching them in the chest and turning to firmly shove them backwards. in their current state, they stumbled and fell.

the other guards had already fully passed out, and he nodded to tess and opened the exit door.

She held her breath as she darted over to the exit door, making sure Nik was following, and jogged a few yards away from the door before letting herself breathe in the sweet, sweet oxygen. She rubbed at her cheek, hissing as she pulled her fingers away and seeing some droplets of actual blood. "Well, damn."

nik shook his shirt from his face, leaning back and crossing his arms behind his head.

"that was wild. can't believe we got out mostly unscathed. speaking of, are you alright?"

"Never better," she said, turning to look at him, "Just a scratch, and it's not like I haven't been shot before." She cast her eyes upwards, then they darted around the area they were standing in. "I suggest we get going. They'll be on the lookout for us."

"you're right. lead the way, friend."

(timeskip to when they get there?)

Tessa led Nik to an old building with vines crawling up it and windows boarded up. She felt around one of the boards of the window next to the front door, then grabbed a spare set of keys. "Here we go," she said, unlocking the door and swinging it open, "Home sweet home."

Inside was like a common room, with chairs and sofas seated around a fireplace. A large bookshelf filled to the brim with books took up the entire right wall, opposite of the fireplace. A grand staircase led up to the second floor, which also had another set of stairs leading to the third floor. Two other doorways on either side of the staircase led to the "shared" bathroom, as well as the kitchen. Most of the rooms upstairs were bedrooms.

nik whistled.

"nice place you got here, theresa."
he looked around, sufficiently intimidated by the sheer size of the house. he had fucked rich people before, but had never legitimately stayed with someone until authorities were off their tails.

"It's not mine, it's my friend's," Tessa said, kicking off her shoes and hopping up the stairs. "I'M HERE!!" she called, looking up at the second story. She heard no reply, then came back down to join Nik. "Welp, seems no one else is here."

nik watched stiffly from the doorway.

"your friends, you say? what kinda friends you got?" he kept up the playful demeanor, but didn't move an inch from his sentinel like position by the front door.

"Rich friends, spy friends, assassin friends, jeweler friends," Tessa ticked them off on her fingers as she spoke, "goody-two-shoes friends, twin friends, short friends, tall friends, quiet friends, loud friends, hot-headed friends, cold friends, lotta friends."

"jeez. all i got is a gay scientist and a stray dog. how'd you end up with that many?" he seemed genuinely interested, leaning forward slightly.

Tessa waved him over as she flopped onto the sofa, inviting him in. "I was pretty much adopted by Cinthia when she got me out of the system. She already knew Demitri, and she's the sister of Wolf, Rhydar, and Magnus. Junia and Archer knew each other, and they met Cinthia a little while ago after she did them a favor. Jamir's dating Wolf, and Koralia is engaged to Magnus. Rae's my cousin, and she owed Cin when she first joined, and now she's pretty much the grumpy aunt of us all. Carden's just a busybody that stuck his nose in our business. Kiriti and Tamaki were friends, and Kiriti, being the sweet girl that she is, dragged Tamaki into our group after meeting Cinthia. And Fenris already knew about us through his assassiny work."

(they're pretending my anxiety doesn't exist and making me go to a movie with someone i dont know,,, im pressed lmao)

nik blinked slowly after she finished.

"i would ask you to repeat all that, but no matter how many time you tell me i'm not gonna get it so… sounds fun!" he watched her beckon and moved slowly over, sitting on the edge of the couch as if he was afraid to damage it.
