Phoenix decided to stray off of the pier and go closer to the bay. It wasn't the smartest decision he ever made, given that the rocks of the shoreline were slippery, not to mention that a monster much worse than a siren lurked somewhere close by, but he chose to do it anyway.

Water splashed his legs teasingly as he walked up to the shore. His eyes scanned the murky sea for signs of danger, but the waves were silent.
Or at least, they were until he saw a pair of enchanting, sea blue eyes staring at him from beneath the dark waters. Phoenix immediately tensed up, going for his dagger.

Leave, the siren hissed, it's voice etheral and mesmerizing. Phoenix's mind started to become cloudy, as it normally did when a siren spoke to him. Luckily, the trick to escaping the trance was to think of something you hated, or feared; the opposite of what a siren's voice tempted you with. The disembowled body of the man flashed in his head and the fog trapping his mind immediately cleared.
"Why?" He asked it, his voice low and raspy from disuse. "You're the one who's been terroizing this town." Another idiotic move on his part; engaging in conversation with the monster you were sent to hunt was never a good idea.
Not me, it replied, not unnevered by the fact he could resist its voice, much to Phoenix's surprise. Something else. Evil.
"Like what?" He questioned, intrigued despite his instincts screaming at him to run.
Evil, it repeated. Ancient and powerful. Not safe, even for sirens.
"Okay, but why tell me?" Phoenix demanded, getting slightly annoyed by how vague the creature was being. "Your kind hates people like me."
Yes, but we hate this one more, the siren hissed, revealing its alluring head above the water, narrowing its eyes at him. You're a monster hunter, are you not?
"I am," he responded, wondering if maybe the siren was affecting him after all. He was going to get himself killed if he kept talking to it.
Then kill this one! it ordered. It's presence makes me unable to hunt; I'm starving.
Phoenix was about to say something else but it vanished beneath the waves, effectively ending the conversation.
He frowned. Sirens normally didn't give out warnings. Maybe it was messing around with him, to catch him off guard so it could lure poor unsuspecting victims into its domain.
But then again, it didn't kill him…
Phoenix shook his head. The water was making his thoughts go all over the place. He made his way back to the pier, doing his best to forget what the siren told him.

Elle waited for the girl to speak. But she didn’t say anything, a fit of embarrassment washing over her. “Lizzie, talk. Your constant biting of the tongue never helps you, it will be bitten out of your mouth some day and then you’ll be a freak. Like me.” he said.

She spoke. “Someone tried to kill me. I don’t know who and I wouldn’t tell you if I did. But I can’t stay here. Please, Elle, take me with you. I know you’ve been aching to leave, you never stick around.” she said, and there was a desperate look in her eyes that brought out some level of disgust in Elle. Pitiable figures never helped their cases when they did that.

Phoenix kept walking until he found a nice looking pub, the polished wooden sign outside illuminated by the oil-lit street light beside it saying The Black Barnacle.
He went inside, feeling the strong desire to have a drink to forget the night. He ordered a tankard of whiskey, and when the bartender started to protest, Phoenix slid him a a small velvet pouch that was opened to reveal a handful of gold coins which effectively made the man's mouth shut.

A few moments later, a large glass full of the golden-brown liquid was placed in front of Phoenix, and he took a large swig of it, welcoming the strong, smoky flavor as it burned down his throat.
"Rough day?" The bartender asked as he cleaned an empty tankard with a rag so filthy and old that it looked like it would disintegrate if handled too harshly.
"Yeah, something like that," the monster hunter sighed. He wondered if getting drunk on a night with a monster so horrible that it scares sirens who not to mention was most likely still in this town was a good idea, but as he took another long drink from his tankard, he decided that he didn't care enough.

Elle nodded. “I’ll see to getting you out of here.” he eventually said, and hated the words in his mouth. Ultimately this served only towards the goal of keeping vampirism alive and well, as he was commanded to. Even hunters with their dogs had masters. He took some money from his pockets, handing it to Elizabeth. “Don’t make anything of this. Pack your things and meet me at dawn by the docks.” and one more thing. “Leave undetected.” he said, slipping out of the room.

He made his way, in cat form, to a disgusting bar. It was only when he got to the door that he shifted back to being human. The streets were empty, Elle wasn’t being watched. He stared at the sign. The Black Barnacle, not the prettiest name nor the prettiest place. He shook his head, and entered. He sat down next to a young man who he could tell he’d have some fun with, at least when it came to psychological games. “You look lonely.” he said, bringing to his face a more than somewhat seductive look.

Phoenix's dark brown eyes glanced up away from the now half-empty tankard of the strong drink and towards the man right besides him.
He blinked, doing a double-take. The stranger was perhaps the most enchanting person he'd ever seen in his life. Phoenix resisted the blush he felt trying to creep onto his cheeks, trying to remain casual, even as his heart raced and his mind swarmed with many questions, the most prominent one being Why is this beautiful man hanging around this shithole of a town?
"Maybe I am," he replied, not quite succeeding in disgusing the slur in his voice. His mind was already feeling a bit foggy, but he forced himself to try to remain slightly sober. Being drunk was never a good first impression, especially when interacting with an attractive person.

He nudged his beverage away from him, unable to tear his gaze away from the stranger's alluring dark eyes.
"Um, would you care for a drink?" Phoenix asked with a smile, waving the bartender over to the table.

Elle shook his head. “No, no need. I don’t drink alcohol.” A low blow in terms of referencing his more sinister nature. But absolutely normal, people came to bars for reasons other than a drink. Elle was mostly here to kill time, haha. His fangs were safely tucked up and away, but you could still see the sharpness of his canines if you looked too closely. Not as if a drunk man like this could. “I’d love for you to give me a lovely name to match such a lovely face.” he smiled, giving an aura of nothing but safety and comfort. He was nothing if he wasn’t dishonest about himself at every turn.

Phoenix's face betrayed him as it flushed a dark red. He wasn't used to being complimented or flirted with.
Does this even count as flirting? he wondered, not familiar with the concept. Maybe the stranger was this charming to everyone he came across.
His thoughts raced around like a hurricane in his slightly hazy mind, unorganized, random, and intrusive.
Was talking to me a dare or some sort of prank he's pulling on me?
His smile's really nice, even if his teeth look a little sharp.
Why did he approach me out of all people? I'm far from being a good-looking person.
"Phoenix," he answered as he tried to dismiss his thoughts, becoming very self-aware of how horribly unkempt and exhausted he looked in the presence of this lovely angel. "And you?"

“Ishtar Peregrine. It’s lovely to meet you, Phoenix.” the fake name slipped out of Elle’s mouth easily, with no pause or cause for concern. “Now, what is a man of your caliber doing in this rundown of a town? I’d think a man of your rugged good looks would be out and about the earth, not lost in a forgotten town.”

@phantomflame

"Oh, I'm just here for a job," Phoenix replied distractedly, still hung up on the beautiful man's name. Ishtar Peregrine. Even his name is just as intriguing as he is. "The mayor promised to pay me double if I stayed around a while longer."

Elle stared, intrigued. He’d known this town to be inhabited by other monsters, but none that couldn’t be controlled. So, logically, if this man was a monster hunter (which the case seemed to be) he was likely after Elle. All the reason to try and get closer, so nothing would be suspected of his more dubious and downright disgusting behavior. “Hmm. Well, feel like taking your mind off of things? I know a good place to have some fun.” technically that part of the town was more dangerous, more prone to flooding and sirens, but Elle was sure he’d be able to keep this little lamb safe from the other wolves’ clutches.

@phantomflame

Phoenix tilted his head, his eyes shining with interest.
"I didn't realize this piss-poor town had anything remotely resembling something that would be 'fun'," he grinned, ignoring any sober, reasonable thoughts he had telling him to not go off with someone he'd just met. "Although I suppose that depends on what your definition of fun is."
