"It's a nice idea," he murmured, referring to the field trip. "Even toddlers love a change in scenery. Especially toddlers."

Devon hummed her agreement, nodding. “They definitely do enjoy seeing new places. It’s cute seeing their eyes light up when they see something new for the first time.”

Devon hummed and continued to watch the girls. How had he come to have his little daughter? Certainly not in the way she had Layla… No, his seemed much more personal than her story was. But whatever it was, she didn’t want to ask without knowing him well enough that he would be comfortable telling her.

Sebastian bit the inside of his cheek, trying to think of something to say. But before he had the chance, his phone rang on his pocket.

He fished it out, ready to answer, but froze when he saw the number on the screen.

Devon was watching he girls play when Sebastian’s phone rang. She glanced over just in time to see him freeze when he saw the screen, and she frowned a little.

“Everything okay?” she asked quietly.

@blue_topaz

"Yeah," he answered hastily, eyes still glued to the screen. After a moment, he hung up and stuffed the phone back in his pocket, only to hear it ring a second time.

"Sorry…" Sebastian apologized to Devon, fishing it hesitantly back out. His hands were trembling ever so slightly when he responded.

"I'm afraid I'm not available at this time. Find another day to call, or just leave me alone. Thanks."

Devon almost reached out to place a hand on his leg to comfort him, but then she winced at the thought. She couldn’t do that with him. Or any guy, for that matter.

“You good?” she murmured instead, sticking her hands under her legs and looking up at him worriedly.

Sebastian gave her a nod, but the all-too familiar voice on the other end of the phone cut him off. He tensed, gritting his teeth.

"No. I told you, I'm not coming back. Give it up."

@blue_topaz

Sebastian hung up before his mother could say anything to agitate him further and shoved the phone into his pocket. After a brief moment, he plastered a smile back onto his face. “Sorry about that.”

@blue_topaz

Sebastian's falsified smile tightened. "It's a long story. Someone has been trying to get back in touch with me for a while, but because of… well, our past, I've been running in the opposite direction."

Devon’s gaze flickered over his face. She knew that look, that one of pain and hurt and anger hidden behind a smile. She wore it often herself. It didn’t make it go away, but at least it was easier to pretend with it on, right?

“I’m sorry to hear that…” she murmured, nodding slowly.
