Zelda woke up, and instantly regretted it. She was hungry, and tired. She could hear sounds in the distance. Maybe they had food? She got up slowly, looking around. Feeling too slow, she walked, practically dragging one leg behind her as she realized she couldn't move it very well. She knew words… but she couldn't connect many of them. She didn't even know if her name was really was Zelda, that was just the first word in their mind. Their stomach growled, urging her to move quicker. So she did, before tripping when she started seeing people. And people who looked different. Green-ish, with weird.. deformities? She stumbled right into the middle of the battlefield, right as she realized that it was a battlefield.

Corbin was just supposed to be put on a quick supply run, that was it. He had needed to run to the local grocery store to see if they had any sorts of dog food available for his golden retriever, Orion. He was low on food, and desperately needed to find a bag, maybe two if he was lucky. He had walked his way to the grocery store, Orion prancing along next to him. Making his way up and down the deserted isles, he felt a pang of hope upon finding a small bag tucked towards the back. Sure, it wouldn’t last long, but it was something.

As he made his way towards the exit, gunfire erupted outside. He cursed under his breath, darting down as he looked out the window. A couple of people stood, firing their weapons at the hoard of zombies. Corbin grimaced as he set down the bag of food, opting to help the group and come back for it later. He stepped out, slinging his rifle off of his shoulders and beginning to open fire. It surprised the group, but there were more important things to worry about. Orion stood beside him, barking at the hoard.

Zelda was almost immediately shot. She fell, screaming out. Zombies were not supposed to be able to scream, or make any noise other than grunts. She looked up, looking for anything, or anyone that could help her. She met Corbin's eyes, pleading for mercy. He was the only one who looked like he might help her. All she wanted was some food though, and she couldn't understand why she had been shot. She then met eyes with Orion, who seemed to understand that she wasn't like the rest, but didn't show any sign of helping either. She pulled herself over to the side, very slowly.

She didn't feel like she could talk in a way the other people would understand, but she still tried. "Please." She rasped, but not in any human language. Some of the other creatures turned very slightly, but immediately turned back to the fight. she focused on the sounds she made, and then she made kind of understandable sounds. "Puh" she said, feeling the sound. then she struggled on the l sound, ending up skipping it. "ease." She finished, looking up again. "Puh-ease."

Corbin took a few shots, but froze momentarily when he heard a scream echo through the air. He looked over towards the group of humans, but none of them seemed injured. They were picking off the last of the zombies and beginning to run away, seeming to be out of ammo. He would have followed after them, if it wasn’t for Orion.

Dogs can tell when someone is infected and tended to get hostile, seeing them as a threat. Orion could tell something was different, something was off. He took off, away from Corbin’s side and towards Zelda. Corbin yelled for his dog to come back, taking a stumbling run after them.

Orion made his way over to Zelda, sniffing at her and whining, his tail wagging low. He nudged at her, encouraging her to put her hands on his harness and use it to lift herself to a standing position. It was one of his tasks he learned for Corbin, as he took many falls due to his injured leg. “Orion! Get away from there! What the fuck are you doing boy?!” He shouted, in a panic that his dog may be hurt.

Zelda slightly nodded at the dog, reaching out to pat him, but recoiled when Corbin started yelling. She covered her ears and squeezed her eyes shut, afraid he might shoot her again. She curled her not-shot leg against her chest, trembling a bit and repeating the sounds again. "Puh-ease" She whispered, begging him to either let her be or kill her quickly. "Puh-ease."

She was terrified, stuck in a pit of fear. She felt like this had happened before, and it wasn't supposed to happen at all. She needed to get out. One hand was still gently on Orion, stroking him slightly, afraid of moving any more than that.

Orion continued to nudge at Zelda as Corbin approached, becoming more persistent with his motions to try to help her up. It was his job after all. Corbin stood closer now, rifle pointed at her when he heard her. Did a zombie just speak..? That was impossible, they couldn’t speak. How could this one? “What the fuck..?” he breathed out, slightly lowering his weapon.

Orion barked at Corbin, now leaning down to nudge his nose at Zelda’s cheek. His tail wagged steadily now, in a more calm and happy demeanor. “Why aren’t you attacking?” he mumbled, more to himself than to her. He lowered into a crouch, wincing as his leg ached.

Zelda slowly opened her eyes, leaning more into Orion. She struggled to speak, the sounds feeling unfamiliar on her tongue. "Wh… Why?" She tested out, trying to repeat the sounds. She understood what it meant, but the sounds didn't seem right. She scooted a bit away from Corbin, still a bit worried about what he might do. "Why sh…." She got stuck, unable to make her mouth form any more of the strange sounds. Instead, she blinked at him, fear evident in her eyes. She muttered in zombie tongue, but she knew he wouldn't be able to understand the words. Instead she went back to the sounds she had gotten a bit use to. "Puh-ease." She said something more in the language that was mostly grunts, trying to remember the human sounds for the words, trying to make her mouth form them.

She, unable to, looked up an Corbin again, trying to convey that she wasn't going to hurt him, without making a sound. She just wanted to be left alone, to heal, to eat. And currently, she didn't have anywhere be be alone, any way to heal, or any food, made evident as her stomach growled again.

Corbin frowned, shifting his shoulder to drop his backpack down next to him. He pulled out a small flashlight, clicking it on and shining it in Zelda’s eyes. They were cloudy and the gaze wasn’t all there, confirming that she was in fact a zombie. He clicked off the light and tucked it away before pulling on a set of disposable gloves. He didn’t want to come in direct contact with the zombie, but he knew there was something he had to do about it- or should he say ‘her’?

He reached a gloved hand out towards Zelda, not wanting to spook her into attacking. Orion hopped up from where he sat, tail wagging eagerly as he whined with excitement. “Come on, it’s ok,” he said, speaking as if she was a scared wild animal that he was trying to coax into capture.

Zelda retracted from the light, surprised. She blinked, but let him look. She could sense if she didn't, he might not trust her. Then she looked at his hand, once her eyes had adjusted to the different lighting again. She didn't grab his hand, but she did scoot a bit closer.
"Why?" She said, frustrated that she couldn't voice what she actually wanted to ask. She wanted to know if she could trust him, or if he was luring her into a trap. She jumped a little when Orion hopped up, her gaze flickering to the dog. The dog liked her, and the dog was his, right? So maybe he really wouldn't hurt her. Maybe.

Corbin was taken aback once again when Zelda spoke. So he wasn’t just imagining things. This zombie was speaking english. Very broken english, but still english. He had never heard of or seen that happen before. “Help,” he said, nodding to her injured leg. “Let me help.”

He didn’t know what his plan was even if the zombie did accept his help. Maybe they were evolving to be able to communicate, but they would still be zombies. They would still eat humans. He was taking a big risk with this. But he had a tinge of hope left in him that maybe something good was happening.

She glanced at the dog for a second again, then reached out slowly for his hand. "He-" she struggled on the L sound again. but she nodded, letting him help her. she smiled slightly, hoping she wasn't making a mistake by trusting him. But she trusted the dog, she didn't think it would let him attack her out of nowhere. It probably also wouldn't let her defend herself, but it was better than lying here where the other creatures could come and take advantage of her weakened state.

@Desvelarse pets

Corbin gripped the zombies hand and stood up, pulling her to her feet. He adjusted his thick jacket, pulling the collar up so it covered his throat. He was not wanting to give the zombie a chance to rip out his throat. He wrapped his arm under hers, supporting her weight. He thought briefly about when he was in her position. Having his leg nearly blown off and the remaining soldiers having to carry most of his weight to safety.

Once Corbin had a good hold on the zombie, he slung his rifle over the opposite shoulder and grabbed onto the handle of Orion’s harness. It was a seeing eye dogs harness that he was using to help support his weight. He hadn’t brought his crutch with him, and his leg was beginning to hurt. “Alright, let’s go,” he breathed out, glancing down at Orion. He would have to come back for the dog food.

After an exhausting ten minute walk, they arrived at a small, single story home. Its windows were boarded up and barricaded, and there was a large privacy fence surrounding the perimeter. They reached the gate, and Corbin punched in a code into the pin pad. A beep sounded and the lock clicked open. There was no going back at this point. He had let a zombie into his territory.

He stepped inside the home and went straight to the living room area. It was a cozy, warm home. It looked normal from the inside, for the most part. If you stayed in the home, it almost seemed as if there wasn’t an apocalypse going on. He sat the zombie down on the plush couch, and took a moment to sit in a chair opposite of her, panting as he caught his breath. He was physically fit, but that exertion on his knee seemed to take him out.

"S.." Words still weren't working for her, but she kept trying. "S-ah…." She struggled with the R sound as well, it seemed. So she tried a different word. "Tha-" The n got stuck in her throat, and she sighed in frustration. Could she write? She wasn't sure, but she wanted to thank the man and apologize for his pain. She grunted the words out in the easier word for it, but it would just sound like random grunts and sounds to him, she knew that. She nearly growled, upset at her inability to form the correct words. But she caught herself, not wanting to scare the other person. She instead reached for the dog again, slowly, in a welcoming manner.

@Desvelarse pets

Corbin listened to Zelda grumble and grunt incoherently. It was astonishing. A zombie that seemed to be sentient and not just a starving killer. Were there others possibly like her? Did the zombie remember anything about her life before becoming a part of the undead? Maybe if she improved her speech, that conversation could be had.

“I’m going to grab supplies for your leg,” he said, standing and stepping away towards the bathroom, taking his rifle with him as a precautionary measure. When Zelda reached towards Orion, he happily jumped up onto the couch, resting his front half over Zelda’s lap. He was trying to apply deep pressure therapy, another task he did for Corbin. It was supposed to help reduce anxiety, and Orion thought she needed it.

Corbin returned from the bathroom, sighing when he saw what Orion was doing. He was nervous and worried that something would happen to his beloved pet. Orion was his only companion during this time, and he needed him. He set down a first aid kit and sat on the edge of a coffee table that was in front of the couch. He propped Zelda’s leg up over his own and examined the bullet wound. “Didn’t seem to hit any major arteries, not that it would matter I don’t think…”

@Avhira-The-Eldritch-Horror group

Zelda snuggled into the dog, careful to make sure her mouth was visible. She didn't want Corbin to think she was eating the precious dog, who was very, very cute. She pet the dog, a bit startled when Corbin grabbed her leg, but she let him.

She shrugged when he mentioned the arteries. She didn't know if the blood in her body was necessary. She did know that her leg hurt though, and she made a slight sound anytime Corbins hand got too close to the wound, trying to convey her pain.

@Desvelarse pets

Orion was as happy as could be in his current situation. His tail thumped as he licked Zelda’s face happily, tongue hanging out of his mouth as he panted. “Orion don’t do that,” Corbin corrected when the dog licked her face. Corbin didn’t want his dog to somehow get sick through the touch, if that was even possible.

Corbin took out a small pair of tweezers, a flashlight, gauze, bandages, a needle, and surgical thread. “I need to get the bullet out. This is going to hurt.. Maybe,” he said, unsure if the zombie could even feel pain. He took the tweezers, holding the flashlight in his mouth to provide a better view of the wound. He saw the glint of the bullet, and dug the tweezers in as carefully as he could, grabbing onto the bullet and slowly removing it. He set the bullet to the side and let the flashlight drop out from between his teeth and onto his lap. He dabbed at the wound with gauze as it began to ooze a bit more blood now that the bullet was removed.

Zelda winced, doing her best not to pull away. She clutched on the dog a little tighter, but not tight enough to hurt. She closed her eyes, whimpering, but letting him work without protesting. A thousand things were running through her head, and she felt more like a kid getting taken care of. She realized that she didn't like that, but couldn't really do anything about it. She realized she was very thirsty, and hoped water might keep her from screaming, so she held three fingers up, seperated, and raised them to her lips. "Wa-" She said, unable to make t or r sounds. "Puh-ease?"
