(my second time posting this oof)
hi I'm Frances; and I'm having a bit of trouble writing the first sentence of my story titled; The Blue People of Osmond City. i already have bits and pieces that will make up the first chapter, and a basic list of characters that i plan on using. i always have this problem with starting a writing piece and usually ask my family for a few random words, but rn i can't seem to get it.
My story takes place in the '90s & is about this small city on the outskirts of nyc that holds a tight-knit underground mafia-like hub (The Commission) that basically manages the five main mafia families of nyc. The main characters are the children of caporegimes (mini-bosses) of their own respective crime families. The first setting is in Osmond City, and two boys (kids of the mob) are abt 9 and best friends. Something happens and the father of one boy, (Murphy Redding is the kids name) is killed, and the boys mother is taking him away from the city. Years pass, blah blah, and after numerous secret letters between the two, Murphy finds out that his best friend (Fowler Andreini) had been killed, and he goes back to Osmond City, even though his mom told him they weren't allowed back. (Turns out that was a lie) He tries to investigate the death of his friend (actually boyfriend) and find out what happens/ who he has to kill etc &reconnect with a few other friends. In the end, it turns out Fowler isn't dead and they're reunited, but then,,,, a gunshot, a bullet casing clattering, and both of them are wide-eyed.(º_º)
So…yes, i need help with the first sentence. (Please) Anything would help, actually,;; dialogue bits, a line of poetry¿ anything. Please don't steal this idea– I've worked very hard (made a pinterest, playlist n everythin)

If I should give any more names/ context please tell me, but otherwise ;/

                                       thanks:) have a nice day

@Jolyn

Maybe start off with writing the setting/atmosphere to set the tone for the rest of the scene? Or even dialogue between two characters? If either of these don't give any inspiration I found a cool poem:

there is peaceful
there is wild
i am both at the same time

(Idk who wrote it…)

or even :

We are all
wolves
howling to the
same moon

(also don't know who wrote this)

Sorry if it didn't help, first lines always get me stumped as well….

thanks for replying :) the poems are very simple and give me a good idea of imagery so thank u for that :) I already have some lines of dialogue for the first scene, but I haven't exactly brought them all together (its all scattered) I'm gonna take your advice on writing abt the atmosphere and see where that takes me 👍🏽

@Jolyn

That great! The first few lines or even chapters are the hardest (and kinda boring) parts to write so I'm glad I was able to help.
