So I have this idea for a plot twist w/my mc's family but I'm not sure how it'll play out. Help!

Ahh! Sorry I went to sleep.
So main twist is that my mc's mom has a secret daughter, but she's basically lived next door to her all her life. The secret daughter knows that she and the mc share a mother (whether or not they're half-siblings have no idea) and is therefore bitter towards my mc. My question is how can I explain why the mother "had" to ignore the other child?

That's in the same vein I am in, lol.
In my fanfic, Julia is Seliph's twin sister, but she was separated at birth from her family, and is sent to an abusive orphanage.

That sounds cool. In mine though my characters live in this sort of compound hidden away from the rest of the world, training to fight the antags. So no one really has that much of a parental figure, but I'm still figuring this out. The difference is that the daughter knows that her mother couldn't tell anyone they were related, and is mad because the mc got to grow up with her mom. Does that make sense?

Maybe the daughter was born out of wedlock? So her mum was embarrassed, but didn’t want to abandon her?

I have thought of that, but I feel like the mother (based on the character I have in mind) had a conflict and even though she really didn't want to, she left her, and then when my mc was born, she held on even tighter. I'm thinking of putting in a prophecy? Like one that would come true because of her actions, even though her actions were supposed to prevent it from happening?

That could work… but don’t make it all “chosen one”. That whole thing has been overdone, so if you could figure out how to do a unique prophecy, that might work…

An idea might be doing the reverse of a “chosen one”? As in, the daughter was fated to (spitballing here) die because her mum was too protective, and her naivety was her downfall? Just an idea.

The mom couldn’t support to raise to kids?
Or the parents spilt and the dad lives next door?
Or she had an affair with the guy next door and didn’t want to tell that to her husband, who was on a business trip? Or she had twins and felt the need to give one to the neighbor?

Maybe her family had to leave someplace fast and forgot to grab her?
Or maybe the obusive family stole her?
Or a Rapunzel case where the family steals something and they trade their child?

I like the idea of a reverse chosen one prophecy. Might use that. All these other ideas are great btw.
