This is supposed to be how stateless communism works, where everyone is taken care of based on their needs, and no money means that everyone pursues their passions without having to worry about "functioning" in society the way you would in a capitalist state. Everyone fills a niche based on need and desire. For added fun, if you toss in automatization for a futuristic society, robots and machines would do all the grunge work, freeing everyone up to pursue greater interests.

Also, for your reference, Google "economic structures before capitalism", or "economic structures before imperialism/colonialism".

Even if there wasn't money, trading would probably evolve eventually. We can't do EVERYTHING. There's always that one thing person A is good at making, and something person A really wants and can't make. Well, person B happens to be really good at making the thing person A wants, and wow, person B wants the thing person A makes! So they trade. Maybe person A realizes he can mass-produce a ton of the things he makes, and becomes the "thing-maker" of the town. Now person A is running a business and getting even MORE stuff. Money was just made to make the trading easier. Instead of trading you for a thing, I'll trade you for two pieces of gold that's WORTH that thing. Indians would do a lot of trading, but there were a couple of tribes near the ocean that would trade purple shells which were really rare and coveted for jewelry. Those purple shells kind of became a form of money.

Maybe it could work if there WERE robots that could provide everything humans need, like what Ammy said, but otherwise I think it's too complicated for humans to work out how to provide the needs AND wants of everybody perfectly with no trade…

This is all me talking out of my butt though, I didn't research anything. :P

The trading thing? It depends on what materials they have access to, what they need to survive, etc. Having a basic ruler (usually the oldest family member of a clan, or whoever went off to build a city) and trading goods has been a part of cultures since the beginning.
