Hello, I'd like to run a custom campaign for dnd someday. This site is a huge help, but are there any tools or tips that some of you guys would be willing to share?

@FantaPop

For a custom campaign, you really want to be familiar with the DM's guide, the handbook, and have a copy of the monster manual on hand (if not on hand, then as a pdf). Other than that, you can always check out the homebrew wikia, a few of the other published books to jump off of, or just start writing a basic plot outline.

Player-wise, there's always going to be things you didn't plan for or expect to happen, so keep an open mind! It really depends on how you like to DM, whether you write everything down or wing it, that affects how the campaign is going to go either way. You might also want to invest in a few (or a couple dozen) plot hooks that will get your players interested in the campaign itself. Hope some of this helps!

@JordenMor

Don't be afraid to throw something a level above the party! From DM to DM, it could actually help them. Also, don't reveal too much about your plan but don't have them going blindly. LET THE PLAYERS PARANOIA CREATE 60% OF THE WHOLE THING! It'll scare them but keep them drawn in and it's hilarious to watch. Also Party conflict will happen. Don't try to stop it. Let it run it's course and help if it gets to the players themselves.
