Originality. Be original, don't copy-paste the same boring tropes over and over again.

Passion. Love your work, think its the best work you've ever made. If you hate it you won't be compelled to work with it anymore.

Mix n' mash. Take some original ideas, take some ideas from other projects, and mix and mash! As an example, my main project is a mix of Maze Runner, Tokyo Ghoul, and Miraculous mushed together with all my passion and other ideas. (Strange mix, right?) But of course, you don't directly pull from other peoples work, take it as inspiration.

Genre. Don't hold on to a certain genre in the beginning, let your story flow. You're a messenger to the world to tell people of the story that happened somewhere in the magical multiverse, don't be afraid to let your story span multiple genres (but not change genres completely). If you do this right, I'm sure people will love your work.

Don't write for money. All the money in the world shouldn't overrun your passion for your work.

Think. Daydream, brainstorm, for hours or days at a time, look at every idea you've ever had, and you can lace it in there with a bit of work if you believe its best for the story. Remember that stupid self-insert story you had when you were younger? Take inspiration from that, lace it in with your current project if needed.

It is REAL. Your universe and your characters aren't just OC's, they're a part of you. I prefer thinking of them as my children. Love them, care for them, break them, kill them. They're real to you, they're a part of you.

Don't give up. Even if you do it for fun, don't leave the story within the universe hanging, finish it with a conclusion, even if you can't write all the story down, know how your universe will continue going.

Hope this helps. :)

^ That is all really good advice, but I have one more to add:

  • Go in depth. It's kind of lazy writing to just go "This is how things are in this world," without giving any sort of explanation as to why they are that way. The more you flesh out your world, the more real and believable it's going to be to your readers.

Hope that also helps.
