Little idea that popped into my head:

So, we have a royal family in an empire… on a distant world, in a distant galaxy. The princess (we'll just call her Ms. Romantic for now) is currently available for selection of a potential royal suitor.

Fun fact: Magic is a thing in this society.

When a royal is eligible for a wife/husband, there is a ceremony in which a tracer spell links to the specific soulmate for that individual. When this occurs, a compass (magical compass), shows up on the left or right arm of both soulmates, and a great flurry of excitement and joy goes through the empire as the soulmates try to link up with each other (this is basically the imperial equivalent of The Bachelor here on Earth). If the soulmate is on another planet in the empire, the compass has a modifier that includes a 3-dimensional compass to compensate for angle. Once the soulmates find each other, the magical compasses on each of their arms glow brightly and disperse in a brilliant display.

Sounds romantic af, right? I'm tryin' here…

Problematic scenario: Ms. Romantic has just completed the ceremony, but there is a slight issue that comes up. Her advisors and family members, as well as different analysists throught the imperial worlds, are confused. Her compass, when it appears, obviously shows that her soulmate is on another planet other than the core worlds.

Scout vessels are sent out, fleets are mobilized, and the princess is escorted out into space by her cohorts as they all follow the direction of her compass (keep in mind: THIS IS A REALLY BIG DEAL BECAUSE THIS IS DETERMINING THE FUTURE OF THE IMPERIAL LINEAGE AND HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY FULLFILLED USING THIS CEREMONY FOR, we'll say, THOUSANDS OF YEARS).

But the compass' directions are confusing her and her entire entourage. They just passed the last possible planet in their empire that is in the direction that the compass is pointing… and it still points in only one direction.

At this point in time, the entire royal family is f**king losing their minds. Rough translation: "Whaddya mean there's no suitors on ANY of our worlds?" "Maybe the damn thingamabobber is broken." "Can a magical compass that has been operating reliably for the past several THOUSAND years be wrong?" "Dad, quit beating your head against the wall, you're scaring Mom."

The princess decides, in the end, that the compass must be wrong, and her experts and analysts agree. The matter is resolved as undecided and potential suitors are scouted for by the imperial family.

Fast forward a few months: an unknown energy signature is detected on the rim of imperial space. The imperial fleets try to communicate with the unknown signature, but there is no response. The signature is continuously tracked as it gets closer and closer to the core worlds, specifically the planet that Ms. Romantic resides on.

The signature is finally identified by the empire's scientific community as a vessel of unknown origin, highly advanced, highly weaponized, and being escorted by a small group of what appears to be smaller combat vessels. The vessel bypasses all security measures the empire has and swiftly descends through the planet's atmosphere.

The entire empire is preparing for war with an unknown entity that has swiftly avoided all their best measures to intercept it.

As shuttles from the main vessel land on the front gardens of the imperial capital's royal housing, the princess notices that the compass on her arm has been following the ship ever since it entered their domain.

A grisled human admiral steps off the shuttle platform and strides angrily towards the imperial greeting party, absolutely terrified of what this new race is capable of. The admiral stops in front of the party, apparently tired and annoyed, being escorted by elite soldiers, armed to the teeth with weaponry the empire is unfamiliar with.

It's at this point, that the princess sees the admiral roll back his sleeve, and gasps as she sees that he has a compass on his arm, pointing directly to her, and it's flashing brilliantly.

"Do any of you wish to explain just what the hell THIS is?"

(For the sake of convienence, we'll just say that the compass has translation capabilities).
