Hiya! I need some help naming a war in my universe. It spans across three continents, but mainly takes place in one. Some backstory of the world: Each continent is evenly divided and ruled by two kingdoms, to ensure that no one started another war for the sake of gaining territory. To ensure that everyone kept their word, it was agreed that any kingdom that tried to invade another would be isolated by the other kingdoms. Sort of like an all-inclusive UN.
The war going on right now is just that, though: one kingdom invading its neighbor and consequently being isolated by the kingdoms of the other continents.
Extra: In the main continent this is taking place, two independent kingdoms rose from the conflict.
First off, does anyone have any tips for how to name this war?
Second, is there any example in history where a similar situation has happened? I'm just not sure how one kingdom could defend itself against another when they're isolated and their enemy is getting all the support.

Try something to do with three. Try 'three' in different languages see how it sounds. Drie is three in African. The Drie war. I don't know. As for the rising up and supporting itself, what if a neighboring kingdom wants to help the one that is rising up and smuggles them supplies? If you do this, make sure that the other Kingdoms are wondering how they're supporting itself. Make turmoil break out. No one trusts anyone anymore. Good luck!

If the war is taking place at the same time as your story, then it probably shouldn't have a name. Wars tend to be named in hindsight, after central ideas, participants, durations, etc. think 'the war of the roses', or 'the cold war', or 'the hundred years war'. During the war itself, people just refer to it as 'the war'. Everyone knows which war they're talking about because it's the only one thats relevant.

Good point. The current war has been going on for generations now, though, so I figure that it may have a few names by now–perhaps at the local level, if not yet officially?

@MarylynBirds

maybe you could name it the kingdom1-(kingdom2)-war? and imply there have been civil wars (because then there could be confusion about which war is 'the' war)?

@Broken Princess

When WWI was happening, it wasn’t called what it is now. Wars are usually named afterwards and just referred to as ‘the war.’ You could call it the Great War or the (kingdom being invaded) War.

I wonder if one sanctioned nation could survive and stay independent for "generations" without significant support. What exactly is included in the "isolation"? But that also begs a follow up question: how could their supporter stay anonymous for "generations"? I feel like it would have been discovered in months. So then maybe over the decades, an alliance of "isolated" nations have been forming, until they are basically no longer isolated because they have each other. Now you have two sides that can clash. That's sort of happening in the real world right now (Russia with Iran and North Korea, etc), there just hasn't been much fighting.
