Well, if you've seen Stranger Things, there's the Upside Down (which is a great example of an otherworldly dimension). That would be the best example off the top of my head.
If it was truly designed to keep something in then it would probably have lots of traps and safeguards designed to keep the entity from being freed or from any unsuspecting person from setting them free. Also, consider the idea of eternal punishment (Greek Mythology has great examples of this as well). Hope this helps!

One thing about the upside down that always confused me, is what would happen in the upside down if you rolled a ball across a table in the regular world? would the vines just follow the ball? would they pull off and reattach themselves when the ball stops? would the ball not move at all?
But then again, I have a hobby of finding loopholes in stuff like that

Do you mean multiverses or dimensions? There's a difference. A multiverse is a separate universe that is almost identical to another, but with a few altercations. A dimension might be heaven or hell, they technically exist in our world, but are near unreachable unless you die, or have a unique ability to cross between them.

@Fangirl616 I am meaning a dimension. There is a God that went rogue and the other God's sealed him into an alternate dimension to stop him from destroying the world. Basically, the plot of the story is that there is a cult that is trying to bring him back out of that dimension through a Seer who can see into this dimension and contact him.

Personally, I always compared different dimensions to branches on a tree in my writing. Mostly because one of my characters is a dimensional traveler/planeswalker.
Going with the branches analogy I think it gives an explanation for how it's possible to travel since all of them are connected. I hadn't considered the banishment idea before but… Maybe you can only get to a certain dimension under the right conditions… like how during a really strong storm branches that are normally out of reach can brush against each other…

Sorry, trees are the only way I can think to use for an explanation. ☺️

I read a book that described different realities as a tree, and the tree's trunk is the reality prime. every major decision made throughout history caused a new reality to come into existence, one for one out come and the other outcome would be reality prime. each of those realities have their own realities which branch off too.

this isn't flowing well, so I'll try to give you an example:
I'm hungry for lunch in reality prime, so I can make a sandwich or heat up leftovers from dinner. I decide to go for some of last night's lasagna in reality prime. but what if had made a sandwich? boom. now there's another reality, which we'll call reality two.
In reality two, I make a sandwich. hmm… should I make a PB&J, or a ham sandwich? I make a PB&J. but now reality two has a reality called reality 2.1 in which I made a ham sandwich.
I hope this helps!
