My plan is
Book 1, introduce the cast, expose reader to the vastness of the universe while giving them a solid grip on just who the main protagonists are and why they are here. While giving varying levels of introductions to the three main antagonists, Zatoi, Rio, The Shinzen militia. Zatoi shown to be a ruthless sociopath working for anarchy while Rio stands on the opposite end of the scale but working with a much darker moral code then that protagonists. The Shinzen militia is portrayed as the end the final boss so to speak since everyone, Zatoi Rio and Reynold ( the "leader" of the protagonists) are all going after them just in different ways. By the end of the first book, the reader will have a understanding of the lore of the universe and the motivations of the 5 lead characters.
Book 2. In the second book I plan to push the protagonists off of their metaphorical pedestal and into the grit of reality. Similar to the first book there will be revelations of the characters motivations but now they will be revealed to each other, they learn just how little they truly care for each other. Just how fragile they are as a unit and that fragility brings their neat destruction. Attacked from all ends they have no choice but to divide amongst themselves Paralleled with the destruction of the first rebellion. The ending here sets up the tragic climax of the third book.
Book 3. My personal favorite the third book displays the characters at the absolute bottom and their attempts to claw their way back to their peace failing at every turn. This is the most death heavy of the 4. (Due to the battle on Flora) it also serves as the true end of the revolutrue at the loss of their leader their home and so many loved ones the book ends with the solemn note that the rebellion had soundly destroyed itself.
Book 4. The final book. The first full (minus Carissa T~T) reunion of the main cast since book 2 , the book starts with an uplifting note of three years later a new rebellion beginning. A rebellion brandishing trust and fighting together towards a single collective goal. The first half of the book displays the army growing, small battles against the Shinzen taking place. There is an air of pure determination and a feeling that this is the last chance for the perfect rebellion. Now in control of an entire planet the rebellion becomes a true threat to the Shinzen. The Shinzen fight back desperately begining a large scale war on several fronts across the galaxy. The cast divides a final time but it is different than before, this time they know they have each others back no matter what happens. They fill out their roles and the Shinzen is ultimately defeated.

I was nodding and agreeing until all of a sudden words that would take me 5,000 years to even get close to pronouncing started popping up on the screen and I got completely lost I'm sorry

I especially like the progression of books 2, 3, and 4, but book 1 seems a bit… pointless? I guess that's a bit of a harsh word. You should be able to do all of the setup alongside the plot of the second book in my opinion. Series' tend to suffer from spreading out everything too much with filler that could really be condensed, even if you personally like the filler. That's just my opinion though, you could definitely make the first book work if you gave it its own high stakes and climax and all that. I think every book in a series should be capable of standing alone.

@Paperok

You make a good point, what would you advise? Increasing the stakes in the first book? Or "editing it out" and working the developments that were originally there into book 2?

@Paperok

I mean a lot of stuff does happen in the first book that I did not mention, the first battle with Zatoi, the revelation of Carissa's betrayal, Cameron learning of his mother,

@Masterkey

If you go with combining books 1 and 2, you have two options: either shorten them both (by cutting unnecessary details) and putting them back to back, or creating a mixture hybrid of the two. You'd still have to cut down some things to make it a reasonable length, and it'd be harder to weave two different books together, but you might come out with a fine piece of work if you choose the harder route. Push them off of the pedestals near the end of the hybrid first book, and then have them descend to the depths in the now-second book.

But if you really want to separate books one and two for character reasons (I can see why), give them a good plot that seems like it's its own end game and everyone seems cool with it and the readers are on board to defeat the bad guys, but then at the very end, shit gets real and everyone realizes (the characters and the readers) that defeating the bad guys isn't that simple.

I think it's awesome that they don't just kick ass automatically and immediately, it takes progress, and plot for them to do so. But could you give details as to the world, is there futuristic technology, magic, what's the lore!?! That's not advice, I'm just curious!
