I think that what makes a character "likeable" is having him/her have flaws, as well as strengths. He/she can't be perfect, since no human being is, so keep that in mind. I'd say more about that, but I don't have the time right now, sorry! I'll talk more about that tomorrow, since I think it's very important for people, authors (or creators of any kind) in particular, should know about these sort of things.

I think a key to being likeable is authenticity. Don't make them fake or contrary for no reason, just make them human, with imperfections and all. And not completely naive because that's a mistake a lot of writers make. Most people are very guarded and critical, so make sure your character at least suspects that the world isn't completely rainbows and sunshine.
