In the land of Ilyar, there are three types of magic: Naturalists, Elementalists, and Charmers. Naturalists have animal based magic. Familiars that stay near them. The size and type of familiar varies depending on the strength of the Naturalist gift. Elementalists control the elements. Sometimes just one, sometimes all four. Again, it depends on the strength of the gift. Charmers gifts are controlling inanimate objects. They can command an inanimate object to do anything, even become like a living one. The royal line has traditionally been all of these, one each generation. But fifteen years ago, on the night of the Blue Moon, the royal family was all killed in a coup. They are gone. The country is ruled by a vicious dictator now, who rules through pain and fear.

The magics are suppressed; using them is forbidden. If someone is caught using magic, they are put to death.

The royal family, however, wasn't all killed. One member survives, hidden deep in the forests. Arin Starling is a naturalist, and one of the strongest in a very, very long time. Her familiar? A great brown bear. She, however, has no idea that life in the rest of Ilyar is so bad, as she has lived in nearly complete isolation since she was five. She is twenty, now.

Rumors are starting to filter through Ilyar that the princess is alive. The princess that they all thought lost, thought dead, is in the woods of the north. (Name) has been sent to find her, and bring her back to Jacos Talrun, the dictator. If (name) succeeds in bringing her back, she will either be killed, or forced to wed the dictator who slaughtered the rest of her family.

There's only one small issue. While it was easy to convince Arin to trust them, (name) has begun to fall in love with her. Which of course makes it all the more difficult, when they bring her back to Jacos, and Jacos decides that he will marry her.

I am Arin Starling. I would prefer this to be straight.

(alrighty!)

Arin was, as usual, deep in the woods. She had North Mountain in view, and used it to help orientate her in the woods. Rike was beside her, and they were standing in a stream. It was knee-deep for her, and only came a little ways up on the large bears legs. It was midday, and was warm out, so they were trying to cool off. She splashed Rike with a grin, and the bear splashed her back, using one of its paws to splash the water up. Rike, though huge and intimidating, would never have hurt her, or anyone she asked the bear not to.

(Writer's block is hitting me hard when it comes to writing a response to this. It might take me a while to push through it)

A cloaked figure stood just beyond the edge of the treeline, his hands lost in the seemingly endless folds of his clothing. Despite the clear weather, he had his hood over his face. His head was turned towards the girl standing in the stream, every once and a while glancing over at the bear. He was weary of it, obviously. Who wouldn't be? He just hoped it wouldn't notice him.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Arin bit her lip for a moment, then sat down in the stream, leaning against the bears furry legs with a happy hum. She had yet to notice the hooded figure, her eyes closed and her face tilted up to the sun. With a snort, Rike plopped down in the stream, causing a large wave of water to splash over Arin. She sputtered, sitting up and coughing a little. "Rike!" She exclaimed, laughing softly. "You did that on purpose!"

The figure took the moment of disorientation to move one tree closer, peering around it as a plan formulated in his head.
"Um, hello there?" Riggs Orson asked, slowly sliding the hood from his face and giving her a charming smile. "I appear to be lost. Do you have an clue where the closest village is?"

@ElderGod-Icefire

Arin jumped, leaping into a standing position and staring at him. Beside her, Rike got up and shambled closer to the stranger, sniffing at him curiously. "Oh, I…" She blinked. "It's a few days walk. That way. West." She pointed. "How'd you even get so far in?" She asked curiously, coming closer with absolutely no fear. Her clothes were designed for quick movement, without any thought to any modesty. Her shirt was essentially just a wrapping around her chest, and her pants were a pair of men's breeches, ragged at the bottom.

"I went out for a bit of hunting and ended up loosing my markings," he admitted, pulling a small crossbow from his cloak and a few arrows. "I was unaware of the rain was was getting ready to fall, so all of the trees I had marked with mud had become clean again."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Arin tipped her head curiously. "Oh." Rike sniffed at the stranger inquisitively, standing on his hind legs to get a better look. Arin snapped her fingers at the bear. "Rike, manners." She said. She looked at Riggs, her own expression no less curious than the bears. "So…do you want me to guide you there?" She asked.

Riggs nodded, returning the weapon back to wherever he had grabbed it from. He offered his hand out, giving her a charming smile. "Riggs Orson, and yes, it would be appreciated."

@ElderGod-Icefire

Arin smiled, shaking his hand. Her own hand was calloused and a little rough. "Arin Starling." She replied. "Now…we can't leave tonight." She squinted up at the sky. "It's too late for that. So we'll stay here overnight, and head out in the morning." She looked over at him. "Alright?" Rike got back down on all fours, and shambled back into the creek.

"Doesn't seem like I have a choice," Riggs said, sitting down in the grass.
It really is her, he thought to himself, repressing a pleased smile. Now to gain her trust.

@ElderGod-Icefire

She shook her head with a soft laugh. "Nope. Unless you want to try going alone, which I don't advise." She scampered back over to Rike, climbing up onto the bears shaggy back, where she sat, looking up at the sky again.

"A Familiar?" he called over to her, gesturing at the bear. "If not, I wouldn't suggest climbing onto the beast's back."

@ElderGod-Icefire

She looked over at him. "Yes. Even if he weren't, though, I would still be fine. Most animals wouldn't hurt a naturalist." She ran her hands through Rike's thick, dark fur.
