So I'm writing a relatively young character and want to add a sense of youthfulness to him and not make him seem like a teen acting like a kid. Thoughts?

@Celestial-B

Make him lively! Always exited to go places and never wants to sit down longer than he needs to. Make him ready to go and always wanting to explore, find new things, etc, because that is how most kids are!

My problem, @Celestial-B , is that I've made him relatively quiet and reserved, and doesn't speak much. I do suppose he could start to crawl out of his shell gradually. Perhaps I've written him a bit young for his personality…

I see, I guess you could do that. Maybe you can make him curious, children are always curious and determined to find new things out!

Especially being involved in theatre, I have found that until about 12, most characters should be lively and excitable. They can't sit still, they are looking at and touching everything. Everything about them is exaggerated. They can't lie, and If they are excited, they'll raise their voice without thinking. Even after 12, they are still just weaning off their mindless curiosity. They want to touch everything, and know everything, and if their big brother tells them not to touch the volume, all they can think about is that volume button.

I'm liking curious. Fits well. Since my character doesn't speak often, either, his body language is very exaggerated. He does, also have a quiet hint of mischief. I'm thinking of, as much as it hurts my heart, giving him a few symptoms of PTSD. (Don't worry, they aren't without reason.)

Ah! Don't forget, they're kind of foolish. They might not know completely between right and wrong. I work with kids (part time teacher). Easily bored for sure. They also usually have a role model whom they copy a lot (older sibling, idol, older friend, parents, etc..). Don't forget peer pressure. :)

Hmm…considering the personality traits you have chosen - In my opinion you need to make him really honest and not so cold-hearted. He is a kid, after all. They like affection and you can use that. For example he could be very close with that one person and his character would be build around this relationship. How is his attitude different when he is with that person and when with other people?
