I'm really trying to avoid just making my character someone I would like. Like, I want to make things about her that I wouldn't like and give her little habits and hobbies that aren't cliche but make her even more interesting and imperfect. Any suggestions?

Well, you should always provide indepth backstory. After that, determine some traits because of that. If you think you need to know more, than give her every little detail you can. It helps to determine who she is. On top of that, convey her as different. Don't just make her different, write her different. Hope that helped. I know it's complicated to do that all, but it's worth it for making a very compelling character.
