I'm trying to make a male character named Jasper and he is the name and character that i always use and so he's gone through a lot so i'm trying to give him a dark side (he's always been really happy and light) because i mean if you had to fight an army of Tieflings then you would have some ingrained mental problems because that's terrifying. But i don't want my character to change a lot so i'm thinking about making so he is more sad, scared, and vulnerable when alone does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, has he lost any friends of family? If so, then you can add a new character to be his friend, new family/love interest. (whichever) He can either be untrusting (where he thinks the people he's lost left him by their choice), or he could want to protect people (where he's afraid that anyone who gets close to him will disappear, so he doesn't get close for their safety.) This new character could get to know him, and would help develop Jasper's character that smidgen more.

Jasper could also have terrible dreams where he relives past memories. This might cause him to be sad or aggravated at the start of every day, then he'd be in this sort of haze for the rest of the day.

Did a certain "bad guy" get away? If so, then Jasper could live in constant paranoia/fear.

These are just my suggestions. I'm not sure if you understood them, or if they'll help. Good luck writing though!

You could also make him act like everything is fine around others and then one day have a character walk in without him noticing while he is crying, having a bad dream, or talking to himself about how bad things are.

One of my MCs, who was in some intense/dramatic action in the war, and has severe PTSD, which is very evident after a major mistake in which he loses most of his troops and kills his girlfriend’s older sister, who is a vice admiral on the other side of the war
