I've started exploring new genres recently. I came up with a great plot, but there's a character I's not familiar writing. It's an abusive step-brother, and I've never written abusive characters before. He physically/verbally abuses his younger step-sister. I need help with 1.) what not to do 2.) what has become cliche and 3.) any tips on what I should do to make him more realistic, but also hated by readers?

First of all, I highly recommend doing as much as much as much research as physically possible (google incognito mode if you must) and learn everything you possibly can. That's going to be a lifesaver. Second I suggest not falling into the trap of "here is this bad mean character he is always bad and means I am scared of him". Make your character try to get close to, even love her brother. If he gaslights her, show affection to her at times takes her out for ice cream, braids her hair, it will make his abusive behavior even more emotionally damaging and reprehensible. I also suggest thinking about giving him his own issues to be working through. His own reasons for the abuse he gives. Not that this will redeem him, or it shouldn't, but it will give him more dimension. I hope that helps, good luck, happy writing!
