forum How to write about a more sensitive topic

I have some characters with an abusive mother (like physically hurting them). I want to write about the abuse without it seeming cliche or insensitive but also realistic. I want to put this in the story because it really impacts these characters but I feel like it might be crossing a line. Does anyone have any advice for this?

How i've always done it is like flashbacks and only include certain parts. Like, focus less on the action but more about how the person feels. Are they conflicted? Confused? Emotionally hurt? Scared? Mad at themselves for doing something wrong? It depends on the situation in my opinion.
