(Sorry, I'm not really an fan of sci-fi or Romance)

Rick by Alex Gino is a cute middle grade book about an aroace kid named Rick wow I'm great at explaining things, so it doesn't have romance, but it's more about asexuality. Really good if you like that kind of thing (and if you do, Loveless by Alice Oseman is either out or coming out soon and I'm super excited about it)
The An Unfortunate Fairy Tale series by Chanda Hahn has a little bit of romance, but it's not focused on the romance until later books, and the plot is phenomenal imo
Curse the Day by Annabel Chase is a super good paranormal cozy mystery with only a little bit of romance so far. I've only read the first two books but I'm insanely mad that there's only three
If you're looking for nonfiction, The Like Switch by Jack Schafer and Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs are both really good, but I don't read much nonfiction, so those are really my only recommendations there

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a pretty good science fiction book and quite funny - no romance.
The His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman is a great series with diverse characters and an amazing plot.

OP said they aren't a fan of Sci-fi. What is sad, I was going to suggest The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy too. This series rocks!

  • The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart: Middle grade fantasy series with some awesome worldbuilding and hardly any romance.
  • The Book Thief by Markus Zusak: Historical fiction that takes place in Nazi Germany, told from the perspective of death. Not for everyone, but I really enjoyed it (fair warning, it starts out really slow).
  • The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee: This one does have some romance, but I didn't really mind it and it's not the main focus of the plot. The sequel is also real amazing, and that one doesn't have any romance. (idk what you'd call the genre for this one though? It's mostly historical fiction, but there's some fantasy elements in there as well). Both books also have really amazing and diverse casts, if that's your thing.
  • Onyx and Ivory by Mindee Arnett: This is a fantasy and it also has a bit of romance, but it's not the main focus of the plot. I'm also not a big fan of romance, but I felt like the one in this book was really well written.
  • I Hunt Killers by Barry Lyga: YA mystery/thriller that follows a guy who's the son of a prolific serial killer. It gets pretty graphic so I wouldn't recommend it if you're sensitive to that kind of thing, but it's a good read otherwise.

Whoops, I didn't read the question carefully enough

THANKS! I'm definitely going to read the second and fifth one!

Wow, I am suddenly very aware of how much sci-fi and romance I read-

  • Anything that Alice Oseman writes, her books have strong focuses on friendship and platonic love. While the leads of Solitaire do end up together, the only vaguely romantic stuff happens at the very end. I Was Born For This and Radio Silence have a smidge of romance, but not much either.
  • And I Darken by Kiersten White: gender-swapped retelling of the story of Vlad the Impaler, while there are romantic feelings, none of the characters actually get together.
  • Damsel by Elana K. Arnold: very dark fantasy story centering on a girl who's rescued from a dragon by a prince. Trust me when I say there's no romance in it.
  • Heroine by Mindy McGinnis: centers on a softball player who breaks her hip and develops an addiction to painkillers
  • Sadie by Courtney Summers: told part as a transcribed podcast and part as a novel, it centers on Sadie, a girl who's younger sister was murdered and the killer was never found.
  • Darius The Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram: centers on Darius, a Persian-American teen who travels to Iran to visit his dying grandfather and figure out who he is.
  • Now Entering Addamsville by Francesca Zappia: small-town murder ghosts!!
  • Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: centers on two girls in World War II who are shot down over Germany.
  • Hello Girls by Brittany Cavallaro and Emily Henry: just a couple of girls fucking shit up. No romance, just chaos.
