Blood of Eorr and Hunters in Chains lore dumping

because I need a place to put all of this (and easy access should I want to show this to anyone)

BLOOD OF EORR

Eorr pronounced Ore

Its first recorded use was a little over 6000 years ago. The first civilization to have utilized the Blood of Eorr also worshiped a god of harvest “Eorr,” who was associated with great famines and volcano eruptions. the two were often connected with each other. It sometimes was also associated with renewal.

(Someone let me know if this link isn’t accessible. an ancient interpretation of Eorr lending his blood to humans after a volcanic famine. although vaguely humanoid, Eorr has a notably ‘inhuman’ appearance. His appearance has physical characteristics of the plant Monsan, of which the Blood of Eorr is harvested from.)

It should be noted that there’s a lot of gaps in the history of the Blood, due to the records having been quite literally wiped out of existence.

the first civilization who utilized the Blood of Eorr was wiped out in a catastrophic event that eliminated almost all records of them existing. in fact, nearly all cases of individuals or groups using the Blood ended up suffering a horrible fate; either known or unknown.

Monsan is the plant that the Blood is harvested from. Preferring low light areas, the Monsan is an incredibly rare plant. Its existence only became widely known in the modern era “Age of Information,” where computers and the internet rapidly advanced and the spread of information became faster and easier. Even then, many still believe the plant as a conspiracy theory, calling it “not of this world” or “made up”.

The fully grown Monsan is a long stalk, about 1.5ft in length. Dark in colour, the plant has long, thin leaves on its upper body. Most of the plant is charcoal grey, but the upper stalk is a dark red, and some of the leaves appear dark red as well when exposed to light. The plant’s leaves have a feeling to them described as “dry.”

Monsan plants grow in close quarters to each other. They will rarely be found alone.

The name Monsan originates from the Romans, who rediscovered the plant at some point. This means that the plant likely had other names that are now lost to time.

Monsan is a combination of the Latin words Monstrum and Sanguis (monster blood). The name was earned from the Romans who observed the plant’s effect on living beings.

Additionally, by some observers the plant was said to have a certain “unholiness” to it. This may correlate to the fact that almost all animals, save for humans, will avoid the plant at all costs.

Certain conditions (such as rabies) can cause an animal to not avoid the Monsan, however, they don’t go out of their way to interact with it, either. Therefore rabies doesn’t have a special connection to the plant; it’s simply the disease affecting the brain, causing erratic behaviour that normally wouldn’t happen.

The plant, Monsan, contains the Blood of Eorr. While commonly thought to be gold in colour, the liquid obtained from the plant is originally dark red (“So dark, at first glance I assumed it was black.”) but after 30 minutes of first exposure to open air, turns a gold colour (after the first 30 minutes it may not be immediately gold, but the change becomes clear)

The Blood is mostly stored in the stalk of the plant, but is also distributed through its leaves and roots. The Monsan has a large root system; intertwining with neighbouring plants.

As parts of the Blood goes through the roots, it also contaminates the nearby soil. Soil removed from the area and brought miles away will still carry the same effect on animals (fear, wanting to get away); the contamination does not leave the soil. Additionally, if different plants are grown in the contaminated soil, traces of the Blood can be found in them, although not enough to cause a mutation.

The Blood is most known for its effects on all life forms.

The mutations are often extreme; 9/10 they turn the individual into a mindless zombie who seeks only to feed and occasionally infect. Not everyone mutated by the Blood can infect, only certain people can (called Infector Variants). As an Infector, they may infect through various means; most people think of biting as a key way. And while not wrong, it’s more the saliva that does the job, meaning saliva must get into an open wound. Additionally, Infectors can only infect in a singular way.

Another way is through spores released by the body; spores don’t live for long, but have the advantage of being able to infect multiple targets in a radius.

Sometimes, if the person has the right attributes (it’s a dice roll, not really sure what the ‘correct’ traits would be) they don’t turn mindless. Instead, they become a Mutant.

Mutants have a long history in human civilization, but are most commonly weaponized en mass in the modern era.

After several minor incidents culminating into a major incident, most of the world governments stood together and created the “Department of Anti Mutant Defense,” DAMD, in effort to control the use of the Blood. Many illegal organizations still continue to operate with the use of the Blood (money, chaos; one could have so many motivations) and even some countries not in the DAMD agreement (and sometimes one IN the agreement, just very carefully, in secrecy) also enable the use of the Blood.

DAMD, though anti mutant, has mutant soldiers within its midst. These soldiers are given smaller dosages at a young age and special training to become a DAMD Modified Soldier. Their dosage level is usually not high enough to cause physical mutations; only enhanced senses, reflexes, pain tolerance, faster healing; but in the event that it does, the physical mutations are only subtle (an extra row of teeth, small spottings of scales on their bodies)

In its modified form, the Blood becomes slightly transparent blue. It also must be kept at temperatures of 5 degrees Celsius if kept for preservation and not immediate use.

Through human tampering, several strains of the Blood have also risen. As a general rule, the Blood of Eorr allows all of its users to heal a bit faster, and give them far higher pain tolerance than the average human.

The first is the Original Strain that has been with humanity since the beginning. Only modified to become useable to humans, the O strain has received very little changes.

The O strain grants its users…

But also gives way to many physical mutations, specifically if the subject is uncontrolled. Grotesque in appearance, the subject may take on the appearance of a classical zombie and even seem to act like one as well.

As with all strains, individuals infected by it may mutate into a special variant (other than a basic and Infector variant). Controlled humans that turned into uncontrolled mutants have a 100% chance of becoming a special variant, while basic (or Infector) variants have a small chance.

DAMD modified soldiers are infected with this variant.

The A strain “Animalia Strain” is an older strain. A strain gives its subjects animalistic traits and even behaviour (the controlled mutants infected by it are known to push the boundaries of civility). Even Controlled mutants appear monstrous. This strain is known for having very prevalent physical symptoms; hard to hide.

Granted by the A strain…

However, out of all of the strains, people infected by the A strain who manage to be controlled mutants have the shortest life expectancy. Not exactly a correct term as the individual doesn’t die, but the human in them does. Overall, mutants are sometimes known to ‘lose their mind,’ but A strain individuals have the highest rate of this. After a while, the A strain individual becomes a hazard to those around them. Aznaro, a historical A strain mutant, only lasted 10 years after he became one. He was recorded as progressively becoming more and more aggressive, “pushing the limits”, and even forgetting his prior relationships.

Additionally, all uncontrolled mutants from the A strain were once controlled mutants. This is due to the fact that, if the host is initially incompatible, the A strain kills its host, often in a brutal manner. The reason for this is unknown, but perhaps whoever cultivated the A strain only intended for the strongest to receive it - a way to filter out the unworthy, so to speak.

The E strain is a younger strain. E strain standing for EMF strain (which in turn stands for something longer, Electromagnetic Field Strain). The subjects infected by this are an elusive bunch. Physically weak, one might wonder how they survive. Truthfully, they’re among some of the strongest.

Granted by the E strain…

Individuals infected by this variant are blind. They lose their vision gradually. They often have an alien appearance - tall, gaunt, and the occasional bioluminescence. While not the strongest physically, E strain has the highest percentage of infector variants; most commonly the ‘spore’ variant; infectors infect through the spores that they occasionally release. Spore supply is limited, but replenishes naturally.

E strains are observed as being more cautious (perhaps due to lack of resilience and strength), opting to surround themselves with as many defences as they can. They prefer to hide in dark places.

The D (Ductile) strain isn’t so different from the O strain. Slight adjustments give its users the ability to manipulate a mysterious material (where does it come from? no one knows) described as being charcoal grey in colour. Subjects infected with the D strain can manipulate this material to aid them in movement or combat.

The D strain grants…

Here’s the thing: the O strain is the newest strain, created by a mysterious organization that works against DAMD. DAMD is not fond of this organization, so it’s not a big fan of the O strain either, since anyone infected by it is either a) a mindless zombie, or b) a highly trained, deadly mutant soldier working for this organization. Rumours have risen that one of their soldiers may have betrayed the organization, however…
