The New Vellarton Squad
Crispin
- Anti-Hero: Has no problem with hurting or even killing people who have wronged him. He even tends to lash out at some of his friends at times.
- Heroic Bastard: Has no idea who is mother is.
- Had to be Sharp: Was raised in a sketchy town before he went off to live on his father's pirate ship.
- Offing the Offspring: Crispin's father tries to kill him after he finds out about his powers.
- Clip Its Wings: Breaks one of his wings after he collides with a building. He recovers eventually, but spends a lot of time being miserable at how useless his powers are.
- Winged Humanoid: Has the ability to fly thanks to a pair of wings that can retract into his back when he's not using them.
- Knife Nut: Keeps at least five throwing knives on him at all times.
- Didn't Think This Through: Happens a couple times, but notably when he killed a Patrol guard in broad daylight to save his friends without making sure that there weren't any witnesses (there were).
- Claustrophobia: Although he never openly admits it, Crispin gets extremely anxious in small, enclosed spaces.
- Hates Their Parent: Hates his mother for abandoning him, hates his father for trying to kill him.
- The Napoleon: Angry, short, and god help anyone who mocks him for the latter.
Kit
- Interclass Friendship: Literally every friendship with him is this.
- Cannot Keep a Secret: Despite saying otherwise, he slips up on multiple occasions.
- Good Parents: One of the few characters who actually has a good relationship with both parents.
- Royal Brat: In the first part of the book, at least.
Caleb
- Fallen on Hard Times Job: Worked as a chimney sweep after his mother died. Later became a healer, but only because his sister was sick and Gerard was having an emotional breakdown.
- Easily Impressed: Caleb tends to be easily impressed due to his simple, poor lifestyle. It's especially noticeable when he visits the Royal District in Galtia for the first time.
Eva
- The Kindess of Strangers: Tells Kit that the Patrol is drugging him and later teams up with him to hatch an escape plan.
Frank
- Team Dad: Frank is this to most of the citizens of New Vellarton.
Matthew
- Dark and Troubled Past: Too spoilery to really get into, but was emotionally abused by his father. He couldn't even talk to anyone about it since doing so would mean he'd have to reveal his biggest secret.
- Cain and Abel: Their father said once that Alexander should be King instead of Matthew and Alexander never let that go.
- Hates Small Talk: He takes his role as the King very seriously and tends to just get down to business right away.
- Abusive Parents: Reveals to Kit in a deathbed confession that his father emotionally abused him. Since his father was the King, he couldn't really bring this up with anyone and he grew cold and distant as a result.
- Accidental Public Confession: Experiences a version of this when he tells Kit his deep, dark secret when he thinks that he's dying. He ends up not dying and now has to deal with the fact that Kit now knows everything.
- Hates Their Parent: Hates his father for how he treated him.
Gerard
- Actual Pacifist: Gerard is observed as being vehemently against any form of violence and will usually try to push for an alternative. It's revealed later that this is because he doesn't want to end up like his abusive father.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Generally, Gerard is pretty timid but he isn't above using his powers to wreak havoc when he's pushed too far.
- Tragic Hero: Became a healer in an attempt to make up for all the times where he sat back and watched others get hurt.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Was neglected by his father, which only got worse after the death of his mother who was the only person to really care about him.
- Dislike the New Guy: Is always wary when newcomers arrive in New Vellarton. Usually pretty open about it too.
- Hates Their Parent: Rightfully hated his father, for the years of trauma and neglect that he put him through.
- Misery Trigger: Gets irrationally upset whenever someone tries to ask him about his past.
- Nervous Wreck:
Adelia
- The Only One I Trust: Adelia is this to Gerard.

- Cain and Abel: Their father said once that Alexander should be King instead of Matthew and Alexander never let that go.
The Chaos Boys (Immortal Minds)
Dallas
- Amnesiac Hero: Doesn't remember anything from the night his classmate disappeared.
- The Everyman: Dallas' life prior to the story was fairly uneventful. Even when things start getting weird, he's still very concerned about making it through high school.
Andor
- Starving Artist: Even though he went to art school, Andor makes most of his money working at a cafe and has trouble making ends meet most of the time.
- Keet:
- Large Ham:
- Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: While his two younger siblings never make an actual appearance in the story, Andor implies multiple times that he is the family black sheep.
- Chaotic Neutral:
Ara
- Deadpan Snarker: Seems to have a snarky response to just about everything.
- The Only Sane Man: Tends to be the voice of reason of the group and is really the only one who seems to consistently make good decisions.
- The Smart Guy: He knows it too. Loves to remind the others that he's a doctor.
- Comically Serious:
- Death Glare
- Control Freak
- Enraged by Idiocy: Snaps at Andor for making dumb jokes pretty frequently
- Surrounded by Idiots: He certainly seems to think so, at least.
- Drives Like Crazy: So much so that Dallas compares Ara's driving abilities to a criminal being pursued by cops.
- Insufferable Genius: Constantly reminding the rest of the group of how smart he is.
Holly
- Biker Babe:
- Hellbent for Leather: Frequently wears a leather jacket
- Action Girl:
Groups/Relationships
Andor/Ara
- Opposites Attract: Highlighted frequently throughout the story since neither character actually seems to have much in common with the other.
- Smart Jerk and Nice Moron: Ara being the smart jerk, Andor being the nice moron.
The Magic Keeper Crew
Milo:
- Anti-hero: Morally, his heart is in the right place but he has a well earned reputation for being a liar and a manipulator.
- Hero With Bad Publicity: Is widely known to be untrustworthy and shady even though he is a good guy.
- I Am Not My Father: Often likes to talk about all the great things he's done just to prove that he's not like his father.
- The Kindness of Strangers: Is taken in by a Kvari blacksmith after being disowned by his family and nearly dying of hypothermia.
- All Take and No Give: He rarely does something because he wants to be nice. He almost always has some kind of ulterior motive, especially when it comes to Garzlan.
- Hates Their Parent: His main drive in life is trying to get revenge on his father for disowning him.
- Manipulative Bastard: Seems to know exactly what to say to get people to trust him, and doing so to get people to do what he wants.
Garzlan:
- Actual Pacifist: Due to his country's views on war and violence, coupled with his naturally passive personality Garzlan tends to shy away from any kind of altercation.
- Extreme Doormat: Despite being told by Milo that he should stand up for himself more, he is constantly getting taken advantage of.... usually by Milo.
- Stupid Good: Known to be kindhearted and generous, but often doesn't immediately realize when someone (ie. Milo) is trying to take advantage of him.
